After taking a brief recording hiatus in the mid-1990s to start a family with her husband, songwriter Doug Crider, Bogguss returned to the country music scene to find that her charting power had already faded. Although she last appeared on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in 1999, Bogguss continues to record and perform around the country to a loyal following.
Her most recent recordings have ventured into swing and jazz variations of country. These albums really showcase the tremendous talent in her voice. Suzy is a true singer, and her voice has so much versatility.
In 2014, Suzy added an album of Merle Haggard songs entitled "Lucky". The country & western flavor dominates this album, unlike some of her other recent work. To promote this new album, Suzy has embarked on a nationwide tour.

I Don't need moonlight and roses
I don't want you to stand here and tell me lies
I know what you're feeling, I think I know why
Please don't let this love go by
It's so hard to think in the long run
There's nothing you'd ask me that I wouldn't try
Please don't let this love go by
Don't let this love go by
Don't you feed another flame
And let the first one die
You might believe you can take it in your stride
But these things go bad every time
I feel a whole lot of heartache and bad times
Comin' on like a fast train for you and me
There's a change in your voice, a stranger in your eyes
Please don't let this love go by
Don't let this love go by
Don't you feed another flame
And let the first one die
You might believe you can take it in your stride
But these things go bad every time
I don't need moonlight and roses
I don't want you to stand here and tell me lies
I know what you're feeling, I think I know why
Please do't let this love go by
Darlin' please don't' let this love go by
The lyrics to Suzy Bogguss's song "Moonlight and Roses" by Cheryl Wheeler delve into the complexities of love, relationships, and communication. The singer starts by expressing that material gestures such as moonlight and roses are not necessary for her. She values honesty and authenticity over grand gestures or insincere words. She recognizes the feelings and intentions behind her partner's actions and pleads for them to be genuine and not deceive her with lies. This sets the stage for a deeper exploration of their relationship dynamics.
The songwriter reflects on the challenges of maintaining love over time, highlighting the importance of effort and communication in a relationship. It is easy to become complacent and distant, but the singer urges her partner not to let their love slip away. There is a sense of vulnerability and fear of losing something meaningful if they do not actively work to preserve their emotional connection. The lyrics convey a plea for both parties to be present and committed to the relationship, acknowledging that it takes conscious effort to nurture love.
The chorus serves as a powerful refrain, emphasizing the urgency and significance of not letting their love fade away. The repetition of "Don't let this love go by" reinforces the message of seizing the moment and not taking their bond for granted. There is a warning against turning to other distractions or neglecting the primary relationship, as that will only lead to further complications and heartbreak. The singer ruminates on the inevitability of things going awry if they do not prioritize their love and address any underlying issues.
In the final verse, the singer expresses a sense of foreboding and impending turmoil, likening the challenges ahead to a fast train approaching. There is a palpable tension in the air, with signs of emotional distance and a shift in behavior from her partner. Despite these warning signs, there is a plea for understanding and a desire to salvage their love before it slips away. The song concludes with a heartfelt appeal for the partner not to let this precious love fade, underlining the emotional stakes at play and the deep yearning for connection and understanding in the relationship.
