Patterns
System of a Down Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life is a story,
Go ahead and find your sight.

Life is your glory,
Go ahead and live the night.

But to live means to be here,
In the present, now,
Do you try to bow for the gift of your day,
Then you cede to the morning sun.

Pretending that we live doesn't make us alive.

Life is a story,
Go ahead and find your sight.

But to live means to be here,
In the present, now,
Do you try to bow for the gift of your day,
Then you cede to the morning sun.

Pretending that we see doesn't give us the sight
Pretending that we live doesn't make us alive.

What is it that makes us lose sight,
True sight, of what is real and essential?
I'll take organised patterns of chaos
Over the chaotic organisations of man, any day.

Pretending that we see doesn't give us the sight
Pretending that we live doesn't make us alive.

Pretending that we see doesn't give us the sight
Pretending that we live doesn't make us alive.

The patterns in the carpet do add up though,
You don't have to count.

The patterns in the carpet do add up though,
You don't have to count.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to System of a Down's song Patterns explore the theme of living in the present and embracing life. The song encourages the listener to appreciate the gift of each day and to find their own personal sight or purpose. The repetition of the line "But to live means to be here, In the present, now" emphasizes the importance of being fully present and engaged in the moments of life.

The chorus of the song highlights the dangers of pretending to live or see, without actually living or seeing. The lines "Pretending that we see doesn't give us the sight, Pretending that we live doesn't make us alive" suggest that it is easy to become disconnected from reality and miss out on the richness of life if one is not fully present and engaged.

The final stanza of the song is particularly interesting, with the line "I'll take organized patterns of chaos, Over the chaotic organizations of man, any day." This line suggests that the natural patterns of the world, despite their apparent chaos, are more predictable and reliable than any human organization. The song concludes on a more abstract note, with the repeated line "The patterns in the carpet do add up though, You don't have to count" suggesting that there is meaning and purpose to be found in even the most mundane and everyday aspects of life.

I’m so happy I started looking for obscure soad stuff, and I came across this album (storaged melodies) and this is where I also found starlit eyes. Even though it’s fan made, I love it.

@niakdrolrevottv

Starlit eyes is a song preformed by snot with serj as the singer.

The album it’s on is a tribute to the singer of snot who died in a car accident, the album features a bunch of songs with different singers in the Lead as a tribute to them

When I was a lil' one in 2006 I got passed this on a CR-R, changed my whole life. Then I found out it was Serj+Toni Iommi on this track and it meant so much more, still hits me hard 15 years later ❤
