Another great review Christopher! Amazing how smart the Army got with the "one time" gear issue! By the time I retired after 22 years in the Green Machine, I had almost a complete 2nd set of gear so that I didn’t have to screw with CIF. I wasn’t alone in that. My 3 favorite pieces of gear were my Gore-Tex jacket, poncho liner, & sleep shirt (I still wear it on cold weather motorcycle rides).

I served in 2 field MP companies. We only had a valid use for a E tool, 1 time. In a training range: 1990. I served 04 years active duty. We(MPs) never used them, even on FTXs.

I used to Carry Copies of basic TA-50 so when we came back from the field I could relax and bring rolled fresh looking gear. It gave me plenty of time to clean my gear for the next field problem and if the worst happens I always had a spare.

On the newer IOTV 3 and IOTV 4 vests, they are very simple to put back to together, if the quick release cable is pulled. Just clip the front and back parts of the vest together at the shoulder area.

Make sure to ask for some Chem light batteries when you’re being issued your TA-50 gear. Those things are hella expensive when buying them on your own and most, if not all, units require you to have them as part of your gear.

WOW, what a difference 40+ years make! "ALICE" packs, "steel pot" helmets, C-rations, etc. Of course none of it mattered to me, I was with the 3rd Amtrac Bn (LVT-P7)! We just strapped our gear to the bulkhead of the tractor and off we went. YAT-YAS!

I remember a few things we were issued that never were used like Vietnam era Flak Jackets and pressurized rubber boots ( Mickey mouse boots)I never ever used Army air mattresses always a piece of shit and leaked. I like the modern water supply gear holds more water and seems quicker to get to compared to pulling out canteen. One gear i liked was the Arctic style jacket we were issued.But all in all the modern Army seems to have alot of nice stuff

Fun fact about the the E-Tool: the serrated edge on the tool can be used as a saw or an axe to saw or hack your way through roots, small trees, etc. I have dug many a shit hole in the sand with that thing as well

I still have my initial issue printout from 2002. lol I tried to forget about the damn E tool, I had to dig a foxhole in hard clay during an FTX, and then it rained for 2 days. That thing was a nightmare to dig an entire foxhole with.

When I cleared Fort Hood in 09 CIF was under investigation. If you had your gear cleaned at off post cleaner if you have the slip to the CIF personal it was first time go. The CIF personal we’re getting kick backs from the cleaners.

Fair wear and tear is acceptable,... We had LBE load bearing equipment, suspenders, pistol belt, canteen with cup and cover, ammo packs, first aid kit and usually a rolled up poncho with blousing rubbers to hold it on the pistol belt. Then your steel pot, sweat band in a helmet liner with you name and SSN. Camo cover and band latter on issued with cat eyes. Rank was displayed on cover during peacetime. During exercised we used field pants. They found mop gear was cheaper and served as training value, so our BC directive was mopp level 2 became standard around 1983 for us.
All NCOs had to wear stripped pistol belts when in Heilbronn 1981

Yes. It’s called a JSLIST (Joint Service Lightweight Integrated Suit Technology). It’s a newer version of the old MOPP suit.

I’m heading too basic in July , down @ Fort Benning. 11-B / Airborne Infantry ... I just want to know why do I have too turn in my NVG’s too the armory ? Also can I purchase my own during basic ? When I get too my final duty station if I live off base can I keep them @ my place of residence ? ... NVGs are a sensitive item like the cco optics .
It is technology wich many unfriendly nations would love to get their hands on.
It is expensive beyond belief, and requires some training to service should you get dirt in them etc.
You can buy civilian versions for hunting etc, but 'accidentally misplacing' your NVGs is a huge nono.

Its an IOTV improved outer tactical vest, its TA50 meaning its going to be used up, dirty from a previous guy, and your going to need to return it, and seeing as you are doing 11 bang bang OSUT at benning in high summer believe me , you will pray for the day you will be able to divorce that bulky POS.
There are much more agile and versatile ballistic vest/ plate carriers available on the civie market for security guards etc(try safe life defense)
Never seen one at a PX and just like most TA50 you wont want too

Ps You'll be lucky if you can purchase anything at basic ,we got smoked cuz a buddy bought a doctor pepper from a vending machine at the px on haircut day.
The army will issue you what you need, will rarely give you what you want and will generally fuck you over all day long in TRADOC.

You must follow AR670.1 . Some NCOs or company officers may be more or less restrictive but it depends. I was in during the 1990s. I saw NCOs that didnt care & others that were nitwit control freaks...

Those glasses have been the reason many soldiers have kept their eye sight in combat zones. If you’re smart you wear them, there’s some really interesting videos and pictures of how they protected from shrapnel and such. Look it up
