Flicker
Taking Back Sunday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you should change your name
I'll love you just the same
And if you should run away
I would save your place
So you can go, go, go
If you want to
I wouldn't try and stop you
I couldn't say I blame you

Flicker flicker fade
Destroy what you create
And wonder why it always ends the same
You wonder why it always ends the same

When I said, "I hate that song
About fire and sex you love"
I couldn't tell you why
Why I did it, why I lied
I know it's wrong, wrong, wrong
It's evil but true
It's what I want to make you
(So I can say I blame you)
So I can say I blame you

Flicker flicker fade
Destroy what you create
And wonder why it always ends the same
Flicker flicker fade
Destroy what you create
And wonder why it always ends the same
You wonder why it always ends
You wonder why it always ends the same

You live your life, like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role.
You live your life, like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role (convince me)
You wonder why it always ends the same (convince me)
You wonder why it always ends
(destroy what you create)
Wonder why it always ends, it always ends the same

You live your life like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role

You live your life like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role

You live your life like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role

Flicker flicker fade,

Destroy what you create
And wonder why it always ends the same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Taking Back Sunday’s “Flicker” are complex and ambiguous, full of deeply personal feelings and emotions that are often hard to articulate. The opening lines of the song, “If you should change your name, I'll love you just the same” set the tone for the rest of the song, which is focused on the idea of acceptance and unconditional love. The singer reassures his lover that he would always support them, even if they decided to make radical changes in their life.

But the themes of the song quickly turn from love and acceptance to self-loathing and destructive behavior. The chorus, “Flicker flicker fade, destroy what you create, and wonder why it always ends the same” hints at a pattern of behavior wherein the singer destroys everything good in his life and wonders why he can never seem to find happiness.

The verse, “When I said, 'I hate that song about fire and sex you love' / I couldn't tell you why, why I did it, why I lied” further develops this theme of self-sabotage. The singer confesses to being jealous and angry, but he can’t explain why. He blames his lover for his own destructive impulses, saying that he wants to create something just so he can blame them for destroying it.

Overall, “Flicker” is a powerful exploration of the themes of acceptance, self-loathing, and destructive behavior. The lyrics are complex and full of nuance, inviting listeners to dive deeper into the singer’s psyche and explore his struggles with identity, love, and self-doubt.

Taking Back Sunday progressively gets better and better. They create songs that apply to their lives, and their fans lives in turn. These guys get older and so does their material, but so do the fans! TAYF was a different time for these guys and they were going through different things. You can't hate on them for not writing about break ups and fights with friends if they are married. Bands change and get better.

I even love that the merch now has onesies. I mean come on! :) this band grew up with me from high school to now. I couldn't understand people comparing the albums when they tell different stories.
