Number Five With a Bullet
Taking Back Sunday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're gonna die like this, you know, miserable and old
Really gotta hand it to you, really gotta hand it to you
Are you positive? Absolutely sure?
Well, just get dressed, don't do this

Spent the night lit listening to Miles Davis
Said it makes you want to fall in love
Or be smart enough to keep your distance
You can't decide, you can't decide

We're gonna die like this, you know, miserable and old
Really gotta hand it to you, really gotta hand it to you
Are you positive? Absolutely sure?
Well, just get dressed, don't do this
And just so you know, when we get home, we're through, we're through

It's a long way back South and to where I belong
Well, yeah, you've been there once or twice
And you still don't like it
I say you just never gave it a chance
(Well, give me a chance, give me a chance)
Besides, did you ever stop to think that we can keep this up living like thieves?
But you can't decide, you can't decide
No, you can't decide, well, you can't decide

We're gonna die like this, you know, miserable and old
Really gotta hand it to you, really gotta hand it to you
Are you positive? Absolutely sure?
Well, just get dressed, don't do this
And just so you know, when we get home, we're through, we're through

Are you positive? Absolutely sure? Are you positive?

We're gonna die like this, you know, miserable and old
Really gotta hand it to you, really gotta hand it to you
Are you positive? Absolutely sure?
Well, just get dressed, don't do this
And just so you know, when we get home, we're through, we're through

And just so you know, when we get home, we're through, we're through
We're gonna die like this
We're all hit or miss
And just in spite of it
We're gonna die like this
Miserable and old, and old
And just so you know, when we get home, we're through, we're through
We're gonna die like this
We're all hit or miss
And just in spite of it

We're gonna die like this
Miserable and old, and old

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Taking Back Sunday's song Number Five with a Bullet explore the theme of uncertainty and the fear of growing old and living a monotonous and unfulfilling life. The opening lines, "We're gonna die like this, you know, miserable and old, really gotta hand it to you" set the tone for the song as it progresses with the singer questioning the certainty and security of their current lifestyle. The line "Spent the night lit listening to Miles Davis" suggests that the singer finds solace in music and art but is still unsure of how to navigate their emotions.

The repeated line "Are you positive? Absolutely sure?" is a direct challenge to the other person's confidence in their choices and serves as a plea for reassurance. The phrase "We're through, we're through" repeated at the end of the song suggests that the singer has decided to move on from the relationship and the lifestyle they've been living.

In summary, Number Five with a Bullet explores themes of uncertainty, fear, and the desire for change. The references to music and art offer a glimmer of hope, but ultimately, the song ends with a sense of finality and a need for closure.

@andrewvalenzuela4383

@Gianluca Arian I always thought that they where a hidden gem from the general public, massively underrated, but that's what made them so cool. I love that it's not for everyone. Some people like country, which can have some very emotional lryics, but the only music that spoke to me as an outcast, was outcasted music. Tbs has been my inner dialogue since I was 14.

@TheKingofSteves
