Would You Lay with Me
Tanya Tucker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Would you lay with me in a field of stone
If my needs were strong would you lay with me

Should my lips grow dry would you wet them dear
In the midnight hour if my lips were dry

Would you go away to another land walk a thousand miles through the burning sand
Wipe the blood away from my dying hand
If I give my self to you

Will you bathe with me in the stream of life
When the moon is full will you bathe with me

Will you still love me when I am down and out
In my time of trials will you stand by me

Would you go away to another land walk a thousand miles through the burning sand

Wipe the blood away from my dying hand
If I give my self to you

Would you lay with me in field of stone
Should my lips grow dry, would you wet them dear

Would you wet them dear
In the stream of life

Overall Meaning

In Tanya Tucker's song "Would You Lay with Me," the singer poses a series of questions to their loved one regarding their commitment and willingness to support them through difficult times. The first question, "Would you lay with me in a field of stone," sets a somber tone and asks whether the other person would be willing to be with the singer even in tough situations. The second line reiterates this sentiment, asking if they would still be willing to be with the singer even if their needs were great.

The third and fourth lines display a more intimate side of the song, with the singer asking if their partner would wet their lips if they were dry. This can be interpreted both metaphorically and literally, but either way conveys a sense of vulnerability, as if the singer is relying on their partner for something as simple as hydration.

The song shifts to a more adventurous theme in the next verse, asking if the other person would be willing to walk a thousand miles and wipe blood away from their dying hand. This line seems to suggest that no matter what sort of dire situation the two might find themselves in, they will always have each other's backs.

The final verse returns to the intimate theme, asking if the other person would bathe in the stream of life with them and whether they would stand by them during their time of trials. The overall message of the song is one of love and commitment, cemented by the repeated refrain of "would you lay with me in a field of stone."

My husband asked me to listen to this and said his answer would be YES.. Well I did it all as he asked. You see he was my first love and we reunited after 46 years last July. He got sick with pancreatic cancer stage4 in September and passed away November. I gave him last rites no one was there. So I asked God , he was a Vietnam POW and had PTSD

This is the most beautiful love song ever written and I'd listen to it as a little boy and id think this is a love that everybody wants. It doesn't stop at death but goes on and on..Forever. And I wanted to meet them and run to the ends of the Earth if possible so no one could ever get to us or harm us

I remember hearing this song when I was about seven years old. I’ve been searching for it ever since, but I didn’t know the name or artist. I just found it today at the age of 53. Gonna be a good day!
