Revolution No 1
The Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You say you want a revolution, well you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution, well you know
We all want to change the world

But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know you can count me out, in
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Don't you know it's gonna be alright

You say you got a real solution, well you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution, well you know
We're doing what we can

But if you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell you is brother you'll have to wait

Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Don't you know it's gonna be alright

You say you'll change the constitution, well you know
We'd all love to change your head
You tell me it's the institution, well you know
You better free your mind instead

But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow

Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Don't you know it's gonna be alright

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Alright, alright

Overall Meaning

The Beatles' "Revolution No 1" is a song about the different forms of revolution and the singers' personal stance on them. The song opens with the singer acknowledging the desire for change in so many people, but they also want it to happen in a way that does not entail destruction. They are opposed to violent means of change and declare that they will not take part in such acts. They then move on to criticize those who have a plan for change but do not want to follow it themselves, while asking for others' contributions. The singer acknowledges the fact that everyone is trying their best and working towards a better future, but exchange of money for a change in perspective or ideology is something they will not take part in. Finally, the song ends with the singer advising listeners to free their minds and pointing out the fact that carrying pictures of controversial political figures would not land them any friends.
