Tell Me Why
The Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me

Well, I gave you everything I had
But you left me sitting on my own
Did you have to treat me oh, so bad?
All I do is hang my head and moan
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me

If there's something I have said or done
Tell me what and I'll apologize
If you don't, I really can't go on
Holding back these tears in my eyes

Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me

Well, I beg you on my bended knees
If you'll only listen to my pleas
(Is there anything I can do?)
'Cause I really can't stand it, I'm so in love with you

Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me

Overall Meaning

The Beatles' "Tell Me Why" is a heartfelt lamentation by a wounded lover pleading with their partner to come clean about their true thoughts and feelings. The lyrics are charged with emotion, as the singer begs their companion to explain the reasons why they cried and lied to them. The song's structure is that of a repetitive, laid-back pop tune. It begins with the singer asking multiple times for answers to the two titular questions, each inquiry punctuated by a twangy guitar riff. As the tune progresses, the singer makes his feelings clear: he had given his all to this person, and he's now heartbroken, alone and in a state of constant sorrow. He tells his lover that he is willing to apologize for anything that he said or did that may have triggered the emotional turmoil in their relationship, but he is running out of patience and cannot keep the tears at bay for much longer.

The song's vocals consist of John Lennon's raw-edged lead over an equally raw-edged mix of acoustic and electric guitars. The guitar work, courtesy of George Harrison, is simple but effective, and the bass and drums rhythm section provided by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, respectively, provide just the right amount of backup to carry the song's emotional weight.
