The Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, listen to that now
Oh, look out, it's

She came in through the bathroom window
Protected by a silver spoon
But now she sucks her thumb and wanders
By the banks of her own lagoon
Didn't anybody tell her?
Didn't anybody see?
Sunday's on the phone to Monday
Tuesday's on the phone to me

She said she'd always been a dancer
She worked at fifteen clubs a day
And though she thought I knew the answer
Well, I knew what I could not say

And so I quit the police department
And got myself a steady job
And though she tried her best to help me
She could steal but she could not rob

Didn't anybody tell her?
Didn't anybody see?
Sunday's on the phone to Monday

Tuesday's on the phone to me
Oh yeah

Overall Meaning

The Beatles' song "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" is a poignant commentary on the disillusionment and betrayal one may experience after chasing after unrealistic dreams. The opening line "She came in through the bathroom window, protected by a silver spoon" reflects the idea that the person in question had a privileged upbringing, but still ends up feeling lost and aimless in life. The following line "But now she sucks her thumb and wanders, by the banks of her own lagoon" demonstrates how she's aimlessly wandering, and has failed to find satisfaction or fulfillment in life. The lyrics "Didn't anybody tell her? Didn't anybody see? Sunday's on the phone to Monday, Tuesday's on the phone to me" suggest that despite her best efforts to seek help, she seems to have no one to turn to, and is left feeling lonely and disconnected from the rest of the world.

In the bridge, the lyrics "She said she'd always been a dancer, she worked at fifteen clubs a day, and though she thought I knew the answer, well I knew what I could not say" suggest that despite her exhausting efforts to achieve her dreams, she's still unable to find the satisfaction she craves. The remaining lyrics "And so I quit the police department, and got myself a steady job, and though she tried her best to help me, she could steal but she could not rob" illustrates how the singer eventually finds his place in life and leaves behind his unfulfilled aspirations.
