Spanish Town
The Beautiful Girls Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
went down to mexico, tried to escape the rains.
but every time i see you, i still feel the same.
been down so long, somethings just never change.
but one day, i know, i will be back again.
i'll be back in spanish town my friend.
and how we used to meet down prison oval way?
the days grow longer, longer we're away
from that place that lonely music plays.
but one day, i know, i will be back again.
i'll be back in spanish town my friend.
The Beautiful Girls' song "Spanish Town" speaks about the struggle of trying to escape one's problems by going on a journey but eventually realizing that the problems still exist even in a new environment. The lyrics mention going down to Mexico in an attempt to escape the rains, which could be interpreted metaphorically as trying to get away from internal emotional struggles. However, despite being away, the singer still feels the same when they see the person they are addressing in the lyrics. This suggests that the problems are not caused by external factors, but rather internal ones.
The song mentions specific places, such as Red Church Street and Prison Oval Way, suggesting that the song could be autobiographical in nature. These places are associated with memories of drinking and listening to lonely music, which could represent a longing for simpler times. The chorus repeats the idea that the singer will return to Spanish Town, indicating that they have not given up hope completely.
Overall, "Spanish Town" conveys a sense of emotional turmoil and the desire for escape, but also the recognition that one's problems cannot be left behind completely. The nostalgia for the past and the hope for a better future are both present in the lyrics, making the song relatable to anyone who has ever struggled with their own inner demons.
