They released their first album, The Big Come Up, in 2002, followed by Thickfreakness in 2003, and Rubber Factory in 2004. One of their trademarks is their preference for simple, lo-fi recording techniques. They refuse to use big-name studios, and do most recording, producing, and mixing themselves. Most of Thickfreakness was recorded in about 14 hours in Carney's basement, using only an early 80's Tascam 388 8-track recorder. Often, their recordings still have background noises (such as an owl hooting).

The Black Keys Lyrics

Tear drops like a child
You never thought about goin' wrong
Now you wonder where your man has gone
Midnight is in her eyes
Lately you're feeling low
Heartache on the floor
Your manic ways have got the best of you
Lately, you're feeling low
I see her everywhere
Long amber hair
Calling out my name
I'm calling just the same
Midnight is in her eyes
Tear drops like a child
You never thought about goin' wrong
Now you wonder where your man has gone
Midnight is in her eyes
The song "Midnight in her eyes" talks about a woman who is going through a hard time, and her emotions come through in her eyes with the darkness of midnight and tears of a child. The woman in this song is struggling with heartache and her manic ways are getting the best of her. There is a sense that she has lost herself, and the singer sings about how he keeps seeing her everywhere. The woman has long amber hair, and she keeps calling out his name, just like he does for her.
The lyrics are poignant and evocative, and they speak to the pain and heartache that often accompany love and relationships. The song speaks to the complexities of love and how even when things get tough, one's heart can guide them through the darkness. It also highlights how sometimes, even when we lose ourselves in the throes of love or heartache, the people we love still continue to have an impact on us.
