The Wayward Wind
The Browns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a lonesome shack by the railroad track
I spent my younger days
And I guess the sound of the outward bound
Made me a slave
To my wandering queen

And the wayward wind
is a restless wind
A restless wind
that yearns to wander
And I was born
next of kin
The next of kin
to the wayward wind

I met her down in a border town
we swore we'd never part
Though I tried my best to settle down
now she's all alone
With a broken heart

And the wayward wind
is a restless wind
A restless wind
that yearns to wander
And I was born
the next of kin
The next of kin
to the wayward wind

And the wayward wind
is a restless wind
A restless wind
that yearns to wander
And I was born
the next of kin
The next of kin
to the wayward wind

The next of kin
to the wayward, wayward wind

Overall Meaning

The Browns’s “The Wayward Wind” tells the story of a man who has spent his life traveling due to the pull of the wild, free, and restless wind. He was born into a life destined to follow the wayward wind, and there was nothing he could do about it. The man reflects back on his younger years when he lived in a lonesome shack by the railroad track. The sound of the outward bound always stirred something within him, making him a slave to his wandering queen, the wayward wind.

Now, as an adult, he has fallen in love with a woman he met in a border town. They swore they would never part, but eventually, he attempted to settle down, to no avail. His desire for the open road and the call of the wayward wind proved to be too great, and he left her alone, with a broken heart.

The chorus repeats throughout the song, emphasizing the theme of the wayward wind's restless nature and the singer's never-ending connection to it. The lyrics capture the feelings of those who crave adventure and freedom, and how difficult it can be for those around them.
