02. Who do you love
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah, yeah
I walked 47 miles on barbed wire
Cobra snake for a necktie
Built a house by the roadside
Made of rattlesnake hide

Brand new chimney made on top
Made out of human skulls
Come on, baby, take a walk with me
Tell me who do you love?

Who do you love now?
Who do you love now?
Who do you love, babe?
I say, "Who now, who do you love?"

Tombstone head, a graveyard mind
Just 22, I don't mind dying
Rode around the town with a rattlesnake whip
Come on, baby, don't give me no lip

Who do you love now?
Who do you love?
Who do you love, child?
I said, "who, baby, who do you love?"

Night is dark, the sky was blue
Down the alley, the ice wagon flew
Hit a bump, somebody screamed
Should'a heard just what I seen

Do you love him, babe?
Do you love her, yeah
Do you love me, babe?
Do you love it, yeah, yeah

Well, who, baby, who you love?
What do you love now, babe?

Love, love, love me, babe
Love, love, love me, darling

Overall Meaning

The Doors' "Who do you love" is a cover of Bo Diddley's 1956 hit, reimagined with Jim Morrison's signature poetic style. The song's narrative revolves around a man asking his lover who she loves, while describing his dangerous and edgy lifestyle with vivid imagery. The first verse sets the ominous tone of the song with the singer walking on barbed-wire and a cobrasnake for a necktie, and building a house made of rattlesnake hide. The second verse further highlights his violent tendencies, with a brand new chimney made out of human skulls, and riding around with a rattlesnake whip. The chorus repeatedly asks "who do you love?" with the final verse linking the singer to death, with a "tombstone head" and a "graveyard mind."

The song's appeal has to do with its alluring darkness, edgy rock sound, and Morrison's confident delivery. Additionally, the use of blues elements, such as the opening riff, adds to its authenticity and rawness. Despite being a cover, The Doors' unique interpretation of the song made it a classic rock hit, and it has been covered by other notable musicians such as George Thorogood and the Destroyers and Townes Van Zandt.

Robbie's slide guitar in this song is one of the most intense things you will ever hear in all of rock music. Absolutely straining every sinew while holding on for dearest life.
