Stylisticly, The Feeling have a debt of gratitude to the 70s, particularly bands such as 10cc, Supertramp, Pilot, Buggles, Queen, Stackridge, and other "progressive pop" acts. They are not averse to wearing their heart on their sleeve at gigs, playing covers of tunes by their favourite artists (such as 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by Buggles).
The Feeling have also followed the 'progressive' tradition of the concept album, with Twelve Stops and Home being a concept album about lost and unrequited love. The album starts with a relationship having just broken up, then follows through with the various emotions of the protagonist from hopeless dreamer to turning to drink for comfort, and finally slumping home.

A baby king with a grown man's crown
And we played in the sun as the curtain was crumbling
Well, I was young and I could not see
That if you go, won't you please take me'
And you told me that I would forget you eventually
(And I nearly did)
I thought it was over but it's not
I thought it was over but it's not
I'm spinning in circles, I can't stop
I thought it was over but it's not
I'm in love with a fool
And you don't know what you've lost
It hurts from the bottom to the top
I thought it was over but it's not, yeah
Another year and the job was done
The old republic was dead and gone
And the new way of living would be a reality
But it's a while since you shut that door
I lie awake, ain't asleep no more
Though the nightmare is gone now I don't have a dream
(I don't have a dream)
I thought it was over but it's not
I thought it was over but it's not
I'm spinning in circles, I can't stop
I thought it was over but it's not
I'm in love with a fool
And you don't know what you've lost
It hurts from the bottom to the top
I thought it was over but it's not
Does anybody know
Does anybody know
Does anybody know
Does anybody know
I thought it was over but it's not
I thought it was over but it's not
I'm spinning in circles, I can't stop
I thought it was over but it's not
I'm in love with a fool
And you don't know what you've lost
It hurts from the bottom to the top
I thought it was over but it's not
The Feeling's "I Thought It Was Over" is an emotional song that tells the story of a person who believed they had moved on from a past love but finds themselves still struggling to let go. The song begins with a reference to the fall of the Berlin Wall, a significant historical moment that symbolized the end of an era, and uses this as a metaphor for the end of a relationship. The line "A baby king with a grown man's crown" suggests that the individual was young and naive, possibly referring to the fact that they did not fully understand the consequences of their actions or the impact that the breakup would have on their lives. As the song progresses, we see the singer struggling to come to terms with the fact that they are not as over their former partner as they thought they were. Despite trying to move on with their life, they find themselves still holding on to the past and unable to let go. The repeated refrain "I thought it was over but it's not" highlights the sense of confusion and frustration that comes with this realization.
The bridge of the song introduces a new element to the narrative, with the reference to the "old republic" and the "new way of living" suggesting a political backdrop to the story. However, these lines are ambiguous enough that they could also be interpreted as referring to personal changes in the singer's life. The final verse finds the singer still struggling to come to terms with their feelings, with the line "I lie awake, ain't asleep no more" suggesting that they are tormented by thoughts of their past love. Despite the pain that they are experiencing, however, the song ends on a note of determination, as the singer asserts that they are "in love with a fool" and that their former partner "doesn't know what they've lost".
Overall, "I Thought It Was Over" is a heartfelt song that captures the complex emotions of trying to move on from a past love. Through its use of metaphor and ambiguity, the song allows listeners to apply their own experiences to the lyrics and find their own meanings within the narrative.
