Lou Barlow formed The Folk Implosion with John Davis in the 1990s as a way to explore different kinds of music that his other band Sebadoh did not normally play. "The Lou Barlow Folk Implosion," as it is sometimes called, took its name as a tribute to the band The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Another incarnation of this band went under the name Deluxx Folk Implosion, which featured Bob Fay, who worked with Lou Barlow in Sebadoh, on drums.
Folk Implosion briefly stepped to the forefront of the alternative rock scene with their song Natural One which was featured on the soundtrack to the movie Kids (Kids) and received strong airplay on alternative rock format radio stations.

Out of anger, out of passion
Turn yourself away
Make me lonely, love we only
Need a place to hide
Out of anger, out of love
There's like beyond the castle walls
Go, leave
I said I didn't mind
Did I believe it?
This time in my kingdom of lies
I'm alone
Turn the lights up girl
Turn your anger to conviction
All my shadows fade
They made me lonely
Lies that only
Turned your heart away
Out of anger, out of love
Time crawls
There's life outside these city walls
Go, leave
I said I didn't mind, did I believe it?
This time in my kingdom of lies,
I'm alone
Time crawls
The Folk Implosion's "Kingdom Of Lies" is a melancholic meditation on a love that has crumbled into bitterness and regret. With lines like "Out of anger, out of passion / Turn yourself away / Make me lonely," the song speaks to the way that hurt and disillusionment can warp the sweetness of a once-beautiful connection. The singer of the song is lost in his own kingdom of lies, a lonely space where he has been left to pick up the pieces on his own.
In the first verse, he muses on how he made up the relationship out of anger and passion, two emotions that are volatile and fleeting. He pleads for a place to hide, a shelter from the cold world outside where he can try to repair the damage that has been done. But there is no hiding from the pain of lost love, and as the chorus repeats, he finds himself more and more isolated and hopeless.
The second verse introduces the idea of turning anger into conviction, a kind of self-improvement that is necessary for moving on. But even as the singer tries to pull himself together, he can't help but think about the lies that tore them apart. He ruminates on the idea that love can turn one's heart away from the truth, and without a solid foundation of honesty, relationships are doomed to crumble. All of these themes are underscored by a slow, mournful melody that perfectly captures the sadness at the core of the song.
