Lou Barlow formed The Folk Implosion with John Davis in the 1990s as a way to explore different kinds of music that his other band Sebadoh did not normally play. "The Lou Barlow Folk Implosion," as it is sometimes called, took its name as a tribute to the band The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Another incarnation of this band went under the name Deluxx Folk Implosion, which featured Bob Fay, who worked with Lou Barlow in Sebadoh, on drums.
Folk Implosion briefly stepped to the forefront of the alternative rock scene with their song Natural One which was featured on the soundtrack to the movie Kids (Kids) and received strong airplay on alternative rock format radio stations.

Tremble on the throne
Something unexpected couldn't hurt
Behind my eyes scenes I can't describe
Intimidated, fascinated, stealing glances
Flesh and wire
Knotted with desire
Picture this, everything I miss
Circle back and forth until I'm green all over
Green all over
No fair, music in the air
Under your spell
Fell beneath the carousel
The sound had me spinning all around
Under your wonderful carousel
Merry go down
Skin and bone
Tremble on the throne
Something unexpected but deserved
Picture this, everything I miss
Heaven's daughter underwater conversations
Flesh and wire, knotted desire
Circle back and forth until I'm green all over
Green all over
No fair, music in the air
Under your spell
Fell beneath the carousel
The sound had me spinning all around
Under your wonderful carousel
Merry go down
Under your wonderful carousel
Merry go down
In the song "Merry" by The Folk Implosion, the lyrics portray themes of vulnerability, desire, and the enthralling power of music. The line "Skin and bone, tremble on the throne" suggests a sense of fragility and unease, as if the singer is feeling exposed and unsure of their position. They long for something unexpected to break the monotony and perhaps provide them with a sense of excitement or fulfillment.
The lyrics also delve into the inner world of the singer, describing scenes behind their eyes that they struggle to put into words. This hints at a complexity and depth of emotion that cannot be easily expressed or understood. The singer is both intimidated and fascinated, stealing glances at something or someone that captivates their attention.
The imagery of "flesh and wire, knotted with desire" suggests a tangled web of emotions and longing. The singer chews on their lip, trying to hide the truth, indicating a desire to conceal their vulnerability or desires from others. They yearn for the return of something they miss dearly, constantly circling back and forth, until they are overwhelmed and consumed by their emotions.
The chorus further emphasizes the intoxicating effect of music and its ability to transport and mesmerize the listener. The phrase "no fair, music in the air," evokes a sense of enchantment and being under a spell. The singer fell beneath the carousel, implying a surrender to the intoxicating effects of the music. The sound had them spinning and turning around, completely lost in the experiences it brings.
In summary, "Merry" explores themes of vulnerability, desire, and the captivating power of music. The lyrics paint a picture of a narrator yearning for something unexpected, experiencing a sense of fascination and intimidation, while being enthralled by the enchanting spell of music.
