My Friends
The Head and the Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's no such thing as love
There's no such thing as God
There's no such this as you
There's no such thing as us
And tell me friends
When I'm down
Would you pick me up
If everyone had rights, would anything go wrong
Would there ever be the need for these politician songs
And tell me friends
When I'm down
Would you pick me up, my friends
Would you pick me up, my friends
My friends

I slipped into a cave one day
I never thought I'd leave that place
When I woke up, the sky had fallen down
And oh, what a waste
And oh, what a waste

Lord help me right all of the wrongs that I have done
I never meant to do
Lord help me right all of the wrongs that I have done
You know I've done a few

And tell me friends
When I'm down
Would you pick me up, my friends
Would you pick me up, my friends
Would you pick me up, my friends
My friends

I slipped into a cave one day
I never thought I'd leave that place
When I woke up the sky had fallen down
Our thoughts are written on our face
We try to run and change our fate
But time will always catch us in disguise

Oh I hear you lost your head again

Oh boy, looks like old days are here to stay, my friends
My friends

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Head and The Heart's song My Friends are reflective and contemplative in nature, touching upon themes of love, friendship, faith, and acceptance. The song opens up by exploring the abstract nature of love, God, and even the self, suggesting that they may not exist in the way that we perceive them to be. However, despite this existential questioning, the song soon focuses on the importance of the human connection and questions if friends will be there to support one another during tough times. The lyrics suggest that the sense of community is important as it provides comfort and helps one to move past difficult moments.

The second part of the song appeals to the idea of equality and questions if everyone had equal rights, would there still exist a need for politics? The ideology of the song is further captured by its central message about dependability during difficult times. The lyrics inquire whether or not friends would help pick one up when they are feeling down. The way the lyrics are written creates an ambiance of reflection and solemnity, particularly with lines like " I slipped into a cave one day, I never thought I'd leave that place".

The overarching essence of the song is about human connection and dependability. It portrays that loneliness and isolation can only lead to a waste of time and energy, while meaningful human contact can provide much-needed support during hard times. The song's message is overall one of hope, as it offers the prospect of support and encouragement in desperate situations.
