Composed primarily of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold.
Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or The Avett Brothers with a little extra oomph. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin' bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun.
After the band self-released its eponymous debut album in June 2010, the emblematic Seattle label Sub Pop re-released the album. For the Sub Pop version, the song “Sounds like Hallelujah” has been re-recorded, live favorite “Rivers and Roads” has been added, and the album has been re-mastered.
The band's second album "Let's Be Still" was released on October 15, 2013.
The band released their third studio album, "Signs of Light", in September 2016.
The band's fourth album, "Living Mirage", was released in May 2019.
Band member Josiah Johnson released his debut solo album, "Every Feeling On a Loop", in September 2020.
Summertime
The Head and the Heart Lyrics

Wandering, wondering if these trees could tell
Summertime
I'll make you mine
'Cause I need
Healin' for a hollow wound
If the garden's your daylight
Then I'll work the field
Fielding the ripeness of this stubborn will
Summertime
I'll make you mine
'Cause I need
Healin' for a hollow wound
With room for two
I will sing as your canary bird
Take my soul and bury it in the earth
I will sing as your canary bird
Oh yes I will
Yes I will
I left you over by the wishin' well
Wandering, wondering if these trees could tell
In this song, the singer expresses a deep longing to be with someone they care about during the summertime. The imagery of the wishing well and the trees reflect the singer's uncertainty and confusion about the relationship they left behind. Despite this, they believe that being with the person they care about will bring healing to the emptiness that they feel inside. The idea of this hollow wound suggests that the singer has experienced some sort of emotional pain, but being with this person will help them to start the healing process.
The lyrics "If the garden's your daylight, then I'll work the field, fielding the ripeness of this stubborn will" could be interpreted as the singer saying that they are willing to put in the effort to make the relationship work, even if it takes a lot of work to get there. "Fielding the ripeness of this stubborn will" suggests that both parties may have strong personalities, but the singer is willing to work through challenges to make the relationship thrive. Overall, the song encapsulates the feeling of longing and the willingness to work through challenges for love.
