Composed primarily of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold.
Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or The Avett Brothers with a little extra oomph. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin' bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun.
After the band self-released its eponymous debut album in June 2010, the emblematic Seattle label Sub Pop re-released the album. For the Sub Pop version, the song “Sounds like Hallelujah” has been re-recorded, live favorite “Rivers and Roads” has been added, and the album has been re-mastered.
The band's second album "Let's Be Still" was released on October 15, 2013.
The band released their third studio album, "Signs of Light", in September 2016.
The band's fourth album, "Living Mirage", was released in May 2019.
Band member Josiah Johnson released his debut solo album, "Every Feeling On a Loop", in September 2020.

The Head and the Heart Lyrics

It's not as bad as you think
Brush it off, she'll call in the morning
It's not as bad as you think
Is it a sign blowin' through my mind
Or is it just dust on the road
Lost and found, turned around
Why's it so hard to find a piece of mind
In a world where you're given all of the time
Just to find out, yeah, to find out
Why's it so hard to find a piece of mind
In a world where you're given all of the time
Just to find out, yeah, to find out
Your heart should know
In the mornin' my head is spinning from the evenin'
I try to erase you every mornin'
Why's it so hard to find a piece of mind
In a world where you're given all of the time
Just to find out , yeah, to find out
So why's it so hard to find a piece of mind
In a world where you're given all of the time
Just to find out, yeah, to find out
Your heart should know
Should know, know when it's time
Your heart should know
Should know when it's time
Is it a sign blowin' through my mind
Or is it just dust on the road
In the first two lines of the song, the singer encourages the listener to take a walk and try to relax, assuring them that things are not as bad as they may seem. They suggest brushing off any worries or concerns because the person they are waiting for will call in the morning, implying that the situation will turn out better than anticipated. Overall, the message is about finding solace in moments of uncertainty and reminding oneself that things may not be as dire as they initially appear.
The next lines pose a question about the significance of a certain feeling or thought passing through the singer's mind. They wonder if it is a meaningful sign or simply insignificant dust on the road. This metaphorical language suggests that sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between important moments and fleeting thoughts. They describe being lost and then found, emphasizing that they are navigating through life's journey with other individuals. This line captures the shared human experience and the realization that we are all on this path together.
The following lines delve into the struggle of finding peace of mind in a world where time is abundant. The singer questions why it is so challenging to find clarity and tranquility when we are given ample time to do so. They express a desire to uncover the truth or the answers to life's uncertainties. This longing to find out, to understand, and to attain peace echoes a universal human aspiration.
In the closing lines of the song, the singer reflects on the morning after an eventful evening and describes their head spinning with thoughts and emotions. They admit to attempting to erase someone from their mind every morning, suggesting that their thoughts are consumed with a past experience or relationship. This repetition of the struggle to find peace of mind reinforces the theme of the song and emphasizes the difficulty in letting go or finding closure. Ultimately, the singer concludes that one's heart should intuitively know when it is time to move on or find peace, hinting at the importance of listening to one's own emotions and instincts as a guide in navigating through life's challenges.
The repeated question of whether the sign is blowing through the singer's mind or just dust on the road highlights the constant uncertainty and ambiguity that confronts us in life. The lyrics invite introspection and evoke a sense of searching for meaning and understanding amidst the vastness of existence.
