The Maine was created by bassist Garrett Nickelsen and drummer Patrick Kirch in November 2006. Singer John O'Callaghan joined soon after auditions for the band with no prior vocal experience, along with musicians Ryan Osterman and Alex Ross. Together, they collectively released the EP Stay Up, Get Down. Shortly thereafter Ryan and Alex departed the band for unknown reasons, but were replaced with Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco. The Maine signed to Fearless Records and debuted with a five song EP entitled The Way We Talk in 2007.

My car got stolen and I'm gonna be late
For work this week, make that the fourth day straight
But I'm fine with it (you don't have to worry)
I thought I had it all but I gave it away
I quit that old job and now I'm doing okay
Those material things, they can't get in my way
But where ever she may be
She could be money, cars, fear of the dark
Your best friends are just strangers in bars
Who ever she is, who ever she may be
One things for sure,
You don't have to worry (you don't have to worry)
And this is the part
Where you find out who you are
And these are your friends
Those who've been there from the start
So to hell with the bad news
Dirt on your new shoes
It rained all of May til the month of June
But wherever she may be
She could be money, cars, fear of the dark
Your best friends are just strangers in bars
Who ever she is, who ever she may be
One things for sure,
You don't have to worry
And every day in every way
She looks the same
And every care you used to have
Just seems to float away
And every day in every way
She looks the same
And every care you used to have
Just seems to float away
To hell with the new shit
Whether or not you think you fit in
She could be money, cars, fear of the dark
Your best friends are just strangers in bars
Where ever she is, who ever she may be
One things for sure,
You don't have to worry
She could be rainy days, minimum wage
A book that ends with no last page
Who ever she is, who ever she may be
One things for sure,
You don't have to worry
The Maine's song "Whoever She Is" is about a young man who has reached a crossroads in his life. He's lost his girlfriend, his car has been stolen, and he's struggling at work. Despite all of these setbacks, he's realized that material possessions don't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. In the chorus, he sings that "whoever she may be," whether it's money, cars, or a fear of the dark, he doesn't have to worry.
The song is not necessarily about a specific woman, but rather a metaphorical "she" that represents all of the things in life that can bring worry and stress. The singer is saying that he's reached a point where he realizes that these things don't matter as much as they used to.
The bridge of the song is particularly powerful, with lyrics about finding out who you are and relying on your friends. The singer acknowledges that bad things happen, like getting dirt on your new shoes or experiencing weeks of rainy weather, but ultimately, these things pale in comparison to discovering your true self and finding people who support you.
Overall, "Whoever She Is" is a song about finding peace and contentment amidst life's obstacles. It's a reminder that material possessions and external factors don't define who we are, and that sometimes we need to let go of the things that weigh us down in order to truly move forward.
