The Maine was created by bassist Garrett Nickelsen and drummer Patrick Kirch in November 2006. Singer John O'Callaghan joined soon after auditions for the band with no prior vocal experience, along with musicians Ryan Osterman and Alex Ross. Together, they collectively released the EP Stay Up, Get Down. Shortly thereafter Ryan and Alex departed the band for unknown reasons, but were replaced with Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco. The Maine signed to Fearless Records and debuted with a five song EP entitled The Way We Talk in 2007.

The Maine Lyrics

And the one I hope we take next
It hurts to know
The hardest part
It hasn't come yet
Oh please try
To remind me
95' Just a child and his four white walls
Now that boy is a man
I don't know who I am
I'm just a kid
Don't walk away
Please don't walk away
I don't think I'll make it through today
If you walk away
Please don't walk away
Here's to this love
We didn't earn, yet we're taking
To the same love
That's 30 years in the making
With a thousand more to come
Oh please try
To remind me
Just who you are
1990, a child, and his four white walls
Now that boy is a man
I don't know who I am
I'm just a kid
Don't walk away
Please don't walk away
I don't think I'll make it through today
If you walk away
I'm just a kid
Don't walk away
Please don't walk away
I don't think I'll make it through today
If you Walk away
Please don't walk away
We bleed the same blood
You and me
We bleed the same blood
The way that the river runs through
I bleed for you
We bleed the same blood
You and me
We bleed the same blood
The way that the river runs through
I bleed for you
We bleed the same blood
You and me
We bleed the same blood
The way that the river runs through
I bleed for you
We bleed the same blood
You and me
We bleed the same blood
The way that the river runs through
I bleed for you
I bleed for you
I bleed for you
I bleed for you
The Maine's song "White Walls" is a reflective and emotional exploration of self-identity and the relationships that shape us. The first verse highlights the uncertainty and fear of the future, emphasizing how difficult it is to face what lies ahead. The second verse delves into the past, reflecting on childhood and the nostalgia that comes with it. The chorus reveals a plea for love and acceptance, as the singer realizes just how lost they feel without their loved one by their side.
The line "Here's to this love we didn't earn, yet we're taking" is particularly poignant, emphasizing how much we rely on others to shape our lives and guide us through difficult times. The repetition of "I'm just a kid" and "please don't walk away" underscores the vulnerability and need for support that the singer feels.
The final lines of the song, "I bleed for you," are a powerful and visceral representation of the depth of love and connection that exists between people. The lyrics speak to the notion that we are all human and experience the same emotions, pain, and love, and that these shared experiences are what make us truly connected.
