Do You Wanna Dance
The Mamas & the Papas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you want to dance under the moon light
Squeeze me all through the night
Oh, baby, do you want to dance

Do you want to dance and hold my hand
Tell me I'm your lover man
Oh, baby, do you want to dance
Do you want to dance and make romance
C'mon pretty baby and take a chance
Hey, baby, baby, do you want to dance

(Do you, do you, do you) do you want to dance
(Do you, do you, do you) do you want to dance
(Do you, do you, do you) do you want to dance

Do you want to dance under the moon light
Squeeze me all through the night
Oh, baby, do you want to dance

(Do you, do you, do you) do you want to dance
(Do you, do you, do you) do you want to dance
(Do you, do you, do you) do you want to dance

Do you want to dance
(Do you want to dance)
Will you take a chance
(Do you want to dance)
Will hold my hand
(Do you want to dance)
And maybe let me be your lover man
(Do you want to dance)
Can I hold your hand
(Do you want to dance)
Let me be your lover man
(Do you want to dance)

Can I hold your hand
(Do you want to dance)

Their specialty in covering songs, is taking fast-tempo hardcore rock standards and slowing down the tempo to make it into a stunning harmonious ballad! Simply sublime song making! By far, this is my favorite Mama's and Papa's song! First released in their 1966 debut album "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears," but later as a single in Oct. 1968, only got to #76 on the Singles chart.

Mind-boggling vocal perfection. Especially Denny D.

This song sound so good that it can almost make people want to go back to their teenage years & their magical school dance moments.

In the summer of 2013, I became aware of this genre called Sunshine Pop. I searched for songs within this genre and the first two I heard were The Zombies 'Care of Cell 44' and this cover by The Mamas and Papas. I fell in love with both songs instantly and the respective albums both tracks appear on subsequently. Cass and Michelle's vocals have an almost celestial quality on this ethereal interpretation. Dare I say that summer, I developed a "fan boy" crush on Michelle in her 60's heyday to the extent that I purchased a pair of white jeans and brown cowboy boots to replicate her image on the album cover of 'If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears'.
