Go Where You Wanna Go
The Mamas & the Papas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You gotta go where you want to go
Do what you want to do
With whoever you want to do it with

You gotta go where you want to go
Do what you want to do
With whoever you want to do it with
You don't understand
That a girl like me can love just one man
Three thousand miles, that's how far you'll go
And you said to me please don't follow

'Cause you gotta go where you want to go
Do what you want to do
With whoever you want to do it with

You gotta go where you want to go
Do what you want to do
With whoever you want to do it with

You don't understand
That a girl like me can love just one man
You've been gone a week, and I tried so hard
Not to be the cryin' kind
Not to be the girl you left behind

You gotta go where you want to go
Do what you want to do
With whoever you want to do it with

You gotta go where you want to go
Do what you want to do
With whoever you want to do it with

You gotta go where you want to go

Do what you want to do
With whoever you want to do it with

Overall Meaning

The Mamas & the Papas's song "Go Where You Wanna Go" speaks to the idea of freedom, independence, and the choice to live life on one's own terms. The lyrics describe the desire to break free from societal expectations and constraints, and to pursue one's own path, with whomever they please. The opening lines "You gotta go where you want to go, do what you want to do, with whoever you want to do it with" set the tone for the song, emphasizing the importance of personal choice and autonomy.

The second verse is addressed to a lover who wants to break free and leave the relationship, while the singer "tr[ies] so hard not to be the cryin' kind" in response to this. This relationship is now threatened by the desire for autonomy and the choice to follow one's own path. However, the singer also insists that "a girl like me can love just one man" - emphasizing that even within the pursuit of personal freedom, there is still room for monogamous love and commitment.

Overall, "Go Where You Wanna Go" is a hopeful and optimistic song that celebrates personal choice and individuality. It acknowledges that there may be sacrifices and heartbreak along the way, but ultimately encourages listeners to follow their own path and live life to the fullest.

I fell in love during this time and never stoped loving the man I married, although some times I wished that I didn't love him like I did. This group was always part of our memories together. even now, he has passed, this song still gives me goosebumps as someone else said. The Mamas and Papas were amazing and the harmony excellent. I always felt that I was the girl in this song ..... loved just one man ..... now at 83 ..... this song still speaks to me.

It's difficult for me to imagine loving one man and only one for 83 years. Michelle knew that she needed to find other experiences.

I'm 39 years old and wish I grew up in the 70s. The 80s and 90s was pure gold, but the 60s and 70s was pure originality.

It was a magical time, war raged but the world was changing alot . Hippies, love and sit-ins, drugs and of course, the best Era for GREAT musicians, songwriting, lyrics...Rock and Roll! Concerts, gas shortages and most of my music collections were on 8track, lp's and cassettes! It was great and we thought we'd sing and dance for forever and a day@!
