Bitter
The Pietasters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I know you said, I never helped you anyway
And I guess I know, I never should have trusted you
Sorry to remind you of the promises you've broken
Wouldn't want to dwell upon the lies

So many times I heard about, what I should do
So many times I've read about what you want me to do
So many times I wonder if you realize I don't care about you

Well I heard you said, you never liked me anyway
I'm sure that you knew, I never really trusted you
Even if you come to with promises of roses
It won't be enough to free all the friendships that you broke

So many times I thought about what I could do
So many times I heard about all the stupid fucking things that you want
me to do
So many times I wonder if you realize I don't care about you

So many times I thought about what I could do
So many times I heard about all the stupid fucking things that you want
me to do
So many times I wonder if you realize I don't care about you

Overall Meaning

The Pietasters’ song Bitter is about a relationship gone sour. The singer expresses a sense of betrayal, having trusted the other person and been let down. The lyrics suggest that the other person has made promises and then broken them, and has lied repeatedly. The singer is fed up with all the times they have been told what to do and what the other person wants, and has come to the realization that they simply don’t care about the other person anymore.

The chorus repeats the idea that the singer has thought about all the things they could do or the things that the other person wants them to do, but ultimately, it doesn’t matter because they don’t care about the other person. The song has a very angsty, punk rock vibe to it, with its loud guitar riffs and driving beat. The lyrics are straightforward, leaving no room for ambiguity or interpretation.

Overall, Bitter is a song about a relationship that has turned toxic, and the singer’s decision to let go of that relationship and move on with their life. The song speaks to anyone who has been in a similar situation and felt the sting of betrayal and disappointment from someone they thought they could trust.

Dead

on Set Me Up

The song is about former DC mayor, Marion Barry.

On January 18, 1990, Barry was arrested with a former girlfriend, Hazel Diane Moore, in a sting operation at the Vista International Hotel by the FBI and D.C. police for crack cocaine use and possession. Moore was an FBI informant when she invited Barry to the hotel room and insisted that he smoke freebase cocaine before they had sex, while agents in another room watched on camera, waiting for Barry to accept her offer. During the videotaped arrest, Barry says of Moore, "Bitch set me up.”
