Crime
The Pietasters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My mom asked to film my suicide
Sent her to a mental home
I'm the devil and the king of lies
Had sex on your telephone

refrain:
Bad push, shake me
You can't get through me
I've built a fortress up around me mind
Tell you just how the meaning works out
I close my thrill enjoy a life of crime

Spinning down the halls of school so high
That's the only way to be
Makes it easier to realize
All the crap they're trying to feed

refrain

Overall Meaning

The Pietasters' song "Crime" is a powerful and enigmatic track that deals with themes of rebellion, disillusionment, and mental health. The lyrics are open to interpretation, but there are several possible readings that shed light on their meaning.

The first line of the song, "My mom asked to film my suicide," is a shocking opening that immediately grabs the listener's attention. It suggests a deep sense of frustration and despair, as well as a lack of support or understanding from those around the singer. The line "Sent her to a mental home" suggests that the singer's mother may be struggling with mental health issues herself, or that she is simply unable to cope with her child's struggles.

The following lines, "I'm the devil and the king of lies / Had sex on your telephone," are provocative and suggestive, but their meaning is unclear. They could be interpreted in several ways, but they seem to express a sense of defiance and a rejection of societal norms and expectations. The refrain, with its repetition of the phrase "Bad push, shake me," reinforces this sense of rebelliousness, as if the singer is daring the listener to try and control or contain them.

on Set Me Up

The song is about former DC mayor, Marion Barry.

On January 18, 1990, Barry was arrested with a former girlfriend, Hazel Diane Moore, in a sting operation at the Vista International Hotel by the FBI and D.C. police for crack cocaine use and possession. Moore was an FBI informant when she invited Barry to the hotel room and insisted that he smoke freebase cocaine before they had sex, while agents in another room watched on camera, waiting for Barry to accept her offer. During the videotaped arrest, Barry says of Moore, "Bitch set me up.”
