1. This humorous US pop trio comprised Donny Conn (29 March 1930), Morey Carr (b. 31 July 1932) and Chic Hetti (b. 26 February 1930), all from Waterbury, Connecticut, USA. They formed the comedy and music trio the Nitwits while studying at the University of Connecticut and started touring in 1952 with an act that relied more on humor than singing ability. Renamed the Playmates, they made their first record, I Only Have Myself To Blame, on Rainbow in 1956. They moved to Roulette Records in 1957 and their third single on that label, Jo Ann, a cover version of the Twin Tones' record, hit the US Top 20 in 1958. Over the next four years the clean-cut vocal group chalked up another nine US chart entries including the Top 20 hits What Is Love? and Beep Beep, which reached number 4 in the USA. They later recorded on ABC-Paramount, Colpix, Congress and Bell but their sound proved too dated to sell in the 60s.
2. The Playmates was a Swedish power pop band with its roots in punk and 60s garage. They existed alongside more well-known groups such as The Nomads and released their first album in 1986, called Long Sweet Dreams. At that point some members had already left to form The Wayward Souls.
There is a great interview from the mid-80s on this unofficial website:

3. A Japanese power pop trio with a little punk edge.

Jo-Ann
(Jo-Ann)
I had a sweetheart, her name was Jo-Ann (Jo-Ann)
And if you saw her, you'd understa-and (Jo-Ann)
Why I can't forget her
The girl with the name, Jo-Ann
(Jo-Ann)
I was in heaven when I held her ha-and (Jo-Ann)
And all of her kisses, they were so gra-and (Jo-Ann)
And I really loved her
The girl with the name, Jo-Ann
Then one day she broke my heart
Why did she make me cry?
She said to forget her, but I never can
And I'm sure that I'll never try
(Jo-Ann)
I had a sweetheart, her name was Jo-Ann (Jo-Ann)
And if you saw her, you'd understa-and (Jo-Ann)
Why I can't forget her
The girl with the name, Jo-Ann

Jo-Ann
The Playmates' song "Jo-Ann" tells the story of a man who had a sweetheart named Jo-Ann. The chorus emphasizes the importance of her name, suggesting that it reflects her unique and unforgettable character. The singer recalls the joys of their love, describing how he felt in heaven when he held her hand and how her kisses were so great. However, the story takes a sad turn when Jo-Ann breaks his heart, and he can never forget about her. Even though she told him to forget her, he knows he never will and accepts that he will always hold a special place in his heart for the girl with the name Jo-Ann.
This song highlights the power of names and how they can evoke memories and emotions.
