Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Wade Into The Water" by The Ramsey Lewis Trio hold a significant spiritual and historical meaning. The song is rooted in the African American slave tradition and draws upon biblical references.

"Wade in the water" is an invitation to a group of children to enter the water. In this context, water symbolizes baptism, a cleansing ritual associated with Christianity. The act of wading into the water represents a spiritual journey or a desire for redemption. It is a call for individuals to embrace their faith and seek solace in the divine.

By mentioning that "God's gonna trouble the water," the song alludes to the biblical story of Moses parting the Red Sea. In this narrative, God troubled the waters, allowing the Hebrews to escape their oppressors. The line suggests that just as God acted in the past, troubled waters might bring about divine intervention or liberation.

The repetition of "mmh-mmh" in the song creates a contemplative atmosphere. It serves as an expression of awe or reverence, acknowledging the mysterious and powerful workings of God. This humble reflection enhances the spiritual significance of the lyrics, emphasizing the ultimate authority and power of the divine in troubling and transforming difficult situations.

Overall, "Wade Into The Water" is a deeply spiritual and symbolic song. It encourages listeners, especially those experiencing hardship or oppression, to have faith in God's ability to intervene and bring about positive change. It conveys a message of hope and resilience, reminding individuals that their spiritual journey can lead to liberation and transformation.

February 8th 2023. Hearing a clip of it on the tv show 'Heartbeat' brought back memories. Had to listen to it in full. Great to dance to way back in the 60's.

The drummer on this recording is Maurice White who later formed Earth, Wind & Fire. He played and recorded with Ramsey Lewis for some time
