Green Velvet
The Shroud Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Candles flicker all around
And we're wrapped in green velvet
You're leaning close, whispering
Lips brushing on my ear
And we're wrapped in green velvet
And how the world will always change
And beauty is that that everything changes
The nights are longer than before
I still have much to learn
Before the darkness comes there is
Just one candle left to burn
And we're wrapped in green velvet
The lyrics of "Green Velvet" by The Shroud paint a picture of two people wrapped in green velvet, sitting in a dimly-lit room with candles flickering all around them. The first two lines indicate a sense of intimacy and privacy that allow the characters to speak their minds freely. The green velvet, however, raises a metaphorical curtain between the characters and the world outside. It's almost as if they're cocooned, safe from the uncertainties and changes that lie outside their circle of light.
As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the conversation is not a light-hearted one. The singer talks about darkness and decay, reminding the listener that the world is always subject to change. However, the way the singer describes beauty is counterintuitive - beauty, according to them, is in the fact that everything changes. The final lines create a sense of urgency - the nights are long, there's much to learn, and there's only one candle left to burn. The time to act and learn is now, before the darkness creeps in.
