The Smiths signed to the independent label Rough Trade Records in 1983 and released their first album, The Smiths, in 1984. They based their songs on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr. Their focus on a guitar, bass, and drum sound and a fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk was a rejection of the synth-pop sound that was predominant at the time. Several Smiths singles reached the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart, and all their studio albums reached the top five of the UK Albums Chart, including the number-one album Meat Is Murder (1985). They achieved mainstream success in Europe with The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987), both of which entered the top 20 of the European Albums Chart.
Internal tensions led to the Smiths' breakup in 1987, followed by public lawsuits over royalties. Their live album Rank (1988) reached the top 10 in Europe. Since the band's dissolution, the members have refused offers to reunite and have all separately stated that the band is finished and will never reunite.

Unhappy Birthday
The Smiths Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
But I won't cry
And some may say
When usually it's nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way
I say no, I'm gonna kill my dog
May the lines sag, the lines sag heavy and deep tonight
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
But I won't cry
Loved and lost
And some may say
When usually it's nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way
I said no
And then I shot myself
So, drink, drink, drink
And be ill tonight
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Oh, unhappy birthday
Behind
Behind
Behind
The lyrics to The Smiths's song Unhappy Birthday are a strong expression of disapproval and animosity towards the intended recipient of the birthday wishes. The first two lines repeat the phrase "I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday," which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer goes on to express their dislike for the person and accuses them of being evil and lying. The lines "And if you should die, I may feel slightly sad, but I won't cry" suggest that their feelings towards that person are not based on love or compassion.
The second verse begins by discussing the idea of being loved and lost, which is a common theme in many songs. However, the singer goes on to say that the idea of being happy after losing love is not true. They state that they would rather "kill their dog" than be happy after the loss of a loved one. The final lines of the verse "May the lines sag, the lines sag heavy and deep tonight" seem to imply a wish for bad fortune or punishment for the person they are addressing.
The final verse takes a darker turn, with the singer stating that they "shot themselves" after saying no to the idea of happiness without their loved one. They then encourage the person to "drink, drink, drink and be ill tonight" out of spite. The repeated use of "From the one you left behind" in the final lines suggests that the singer is addressing someone who has caused them pain or heartbreak.
Overall, Unhappy Birthday is a song that conveys a strong message of resentment and negative emotions towards someone. The lyrics are blunt and straightforward, leaving no room for doubt about the singer's feelings.
