There Can Be No Dispute That Monsters Live Among Us
The Sound of Animals Fighting Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

New music
New listening
Not an attempt to understand something
That is said
For if something were being said
The sounds would be given the shapes of words
Just an attention to the activity of sound
New means change the method
New means change the experience
And new experiences change man
Whenever we hear sounds we are changed
We are no longer the same
After hearing certain sounds
And this is more the case
When we hear organized sounds
Sounds organized by another human being
Music
Our entire system of values
Of the things we accept to be true
Is based on the visual sounds
You have to sign a paper because your word is not enough to be trusted
As a result the acoustic faculty in human beings has declined
As it has become possible to define a continuum between sounds and noises
Completely new problems have come up when we compose or play intuitively
Because we have no training whatsoever in balancing tones and noises
Traditionally in western music
Noises have been taboo
And there are precise reasons for this
It has become from began from the time when staff notations were introduced
Traditionally in western music
Noises have been taboo
And there are precise reasons for this
It began from the time when staff notations were introduced
And music could be noted in precise intervals for the first time
Then it was mainly vocal music
Some predominantly with vowels rather than consonants
If I sing a melody of consonants now, people would say it isn't music
We have no tradition of music composed in these sounds
And no notation for it
There you see how narrow our concept of music is
From having excluded consonants the noises
Of course you find consonants in vocals music
But only in order to make a word comprehensible
That's the function of a consonant in our daily language
To clarify the meaning
But in a musical sense
Consonants have no function other than as accents
S s or t or k
To start or end sound clearly
I respond to sounds directly
Sound is my air
Whenever I deal with sounds they organize themselves, so to speak

They respond very well to me
And I to them

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Sound of Animals Fighting's song There Can Be No Dispute That Monsters Live Among Us are a collection of spoken word musings about the relationship between sound, music, and language. The song begins by discussing the transformative power of sound, suggesting that hearing certain sounds can fundamentally alter who we are as people. The singer goes on to argue that our entire system of values is based on the sounds we hear and the words we use to describe them. The song then turns its attention to the taboo nature of certain sounds in Western music, particularly consonants, which are typically excluded from musical composition. The singer suggests that this exclusion is limiting and narrow-minded, arguing that consonants can be used musically and that they add a unique dimension to sound.

One way to interpret this song is as a call for a broader understanding of what can be considered music. The singer seems to be arguing that Western music has been limited by strict rules about what sounds are permissible, and that this has had negative consequences both for musicians and for listeners. By calling for a greater emphasis on the activity of sound itself, rather than on the meaning behind the sounds, the song suggests that there is potential for a more inclusive and diverse musical culture.

Another possible interpretation of the song is as a critique of the way that language shapes our understanding of the world. The singer seems to be suggesting that language and the words we use to describe things have limited our ability to truly appreciate sound and music. By drawing attention to the way that consonants are excluded from musical composition because of their association with language and meaning, the song suggests that our attachment to language may be preventing us from fully experiencing and enjoying sound.

Overall, the lyrics to There Can Be No Dispute That Monsters Live Among Us are a thought-provoking meditation on the relationship between sound, language, and music. The song challenges listeners to think more deeply about the way that we experience and understand the world around us, and to embrace a broader, more inclusive perspective on what can be considered music.

@mrmkl9839

That's genius

@ryleighs9575

Try actually singing this fucking song lol. It's basically impossible by ear lol. I can do pretty well with every other song on the album, and there are other weird ones to sing, but it's surprisingly hard to sing along to someone singing purposely out of tune over instrumentals doing the same lol.

Edit: I bet someone with perfect pitch could, but for relative pitch, not happening without a lot of practice and like, ONLY listening to this song lol.

IKR? It pisses me off
