The ultimate song written about and dedicated to wealthy and bourgeoise, yet internally submissive or remorsefully powerful/dominant men, walking through a party searching for his mistress that will (even if only for one night) cure his aching heart. Fuck, man… NOBODY was writing lyrics like this or composing SOUND like that on this level back then for the kind of audience they were making it for. I mean Lou Reed. Throughout his career his lyrics were pretty spectacular. But yeah there was something kind of magical about them. Had it been off in any direction, it might not have worked. Had they been these really accomplished and experienced musicians it might not have had that magic. But had they been a little more amateurish, they might not have been able to bring it all together. It was this wonderful blend of raw creativity and absolute fearlessness that happened in the right place and at the right time. Like a rare planetary conjunction all the elements just happened to come together. A gift of fate.

So many people and the media make the 1960's out to be some beautiful lovey fairy tale. To me the 60s was a dark time in many ways, especially spiritually. There was a lot of vulnerability under that vale of innocence, a lot of sheep finding themselves in the company of all the wrong shepherds. All those drugs and the internal raging of so many youngsters searching for truth in the darker shadows that Morrison delved into lead to the Manson's and people like the zodiac. There were serious negative waves back then, not that there wasn't always and still to this day, but they tend to be overlooked, or separated from the whole when looking back to this time. To me this song is the perfect embodiment of the "lost ones" of that time, and indeed all times. People who played with the fire and got burned, lost their minds, curiosity killed the cat type deal. It's a spooky song shrouded is mysticism, that's why it's great, and so alluring. The pied piper sits in envy of this tune.
