They appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in October 2002 (the first Australian band to do so since Men at Work in 1983) with the words "Rock is Back: meet the Vines" boldly emblazoned underneath. Referred to as the 'The' bands, The Strokes, The Hives, The White Stripes and The Vines combined "old fashioned punk and adrenaline fuelled riffs" to be ushered in at the beginning of 2002 as the "saviors of rock".
The Vines have been moderately successful in the Australian recording industry, winning an ARIA in 2002 for Breakthrough Artist and receiving nominations for six other awards in as many years. In 2003, their debut album Highly Evolved went double platinum in their home country of Australia, and since then the band has released six albums and a "Best-Of" compilation from their time at Capitol Records.
The band started to record their 5th album in February 2010. The album recording was completely finished in mid March, with mixing taking place in Sydney at the end of March and mastering taking place in early April. The album, "Future Primitve," was released in June 2011.

The Vines Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We might as well all be retarded
Cut from an image turned to stone
Makin' me feel it to the bone
Deep in the jungle or Sahara
Real people carry on regardless
Left unaffected left alone
In the beginning
Or the old days
Surreal lives and mine are strange
Oh yeah I say
It's like futuretarded
C'mon baby don't say
C'mon baby don't mind
Every night every day
Everything will be right
The Vines' song "Futuretarded" is a commentary on humanity's perceived lack of understanding of the future. The opening line "I don't know how the future started" sets the tone for the rest of the song, implying a sense of confusion and ambiguity towards the subject matter. The use of the term "retarded" is deliberately provocative, suggesting that humanity is intellectually stunted when it comes to comprehending the future. The lyrics also touch on themes such as isolation and transcendence, with lines like "Deep in the jungle or Sahara, real people carry on regardless" and "The sun, the earth, the moon their home" suggesting a kind of primal, self-sufficient existence that is beyond the limitations of conventional human society.
Perhaps what makes "Futuretarded" so interesting is its unconventional approach to a common theme. Rather than attempting to articulate a clear message or solution, The Vines use evocative imagery and abrasive language to create a sense of disorientation in the listener. The word "retarded" is a particularly loaded term, one that is often used as a slur against people with disabilities. By repurposing this term, The Vines are challenging listeners to confront their own preconceptions and biases. This challenging and thought-provoking approach is emblematic of the band's larger ethos, which values raw energy and spontaneity over polished production values.
