He chose his stage name in tribute to when he was 17 years old, when, along with his friend La Mar Taylor, he dropped out of high school, took his mattress, and "left one weekend and never came home". However, his estranged former producer Jeremy Rose claims the name was his idea. The letter E was excluded to avoid trademark problems with the Canadian band The Weekend.

The Weeknd gained widespread critical acclaim for his three mixtapes: House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence, which he later compiled to make a remastered, three-disc album titled Trilogy after signing his record deal with Republic. In 2013, he released Kiss Land, which was considered to be his debut studio album.

In 2014, he dropped “Often,” a remix of Beyonce’s “Drunk In Love,” and “King of the Fall.” The Weeknd released two songs in collaboration with the film Fifty Shades of Grey, with Earned It becoming his solo breakout hit.

His second studio album became highly-anticipated, with riveting singles like The Hills and Can’t Feel My Face leaving fans hungry for more. Beauty Behind the Madness was released on August 28, 2015.

His third studio album, Starboy, was released on November 25, 2016. The Daft Punk-assisted title track led the project as its first official single, released on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, before becoming his third number one track in the United States, as also his home country, Canada. The effort was a commercial success, topping the Billboard 200 albums chart with over 348,000 copies sold in its first week, all eighteen tracks debuting on the Billboard Hot 100, receiving a GRAMMY Award for the Best Urban Contemporary Album, category at the 60th annual ceremony, overall for the second time in his music career and being ranked as the third most popular album of 2017 in the U.S.

Next came the My Dear Melancholy EP, released on March 30, 2018 and revolving around his breakups with Bella Hadid during summer of 2016 and Selena Gomez in October 2017. With the lead single, Call Out My Name, the Canadian singer earned the largest first-day Spotify stream count of any song released in 2018 at that time and his eighth Top 10 entry on Hot 100.

Tesfaye’s fourth studio album (and his first in three years), After Hours was officially released on March 20, 2020, and is named after a 1985 movie directed by his idol, Martin Scorsese. It was primarily supported by November 2019-released singles Heartless and Blinding Lights, with the pair becoming his fourth and fifth #1 singles in the US and the latter his first #1 single in the UK. The title track and In Your Eyes were also released as singles.

Although widely expected to receive multiple nominations for After Hours, Tesfaye failed to receive any nominations for the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards (2021). Tesfaye took to his social media to criticize the Recording Academy, claiming corruption. Speculation arose that the announcement of his then-upcoming Super Bowl performance as well as the discrepancy of being nominated as pop music versus R&B contributed to the snubs. On February 5, 2021 The Highlights was released, as his second greatest hits album. Tesfaye performed at the Super Bowl LV halftime show on February 7, 2021 after announcing he would perform in November 2020. He reportedly spent $7 million on his performance at the show. Despite having a mixed response, the show resulted in a surge in streaming and downloads for Tesfaye's After Hours album as well as for the seven other songs he performed.

His fifth album, Dawn FM was released on January 7, 2022, continuing the writing and production work with Swedish pop svengalis Max Martin and Oscar Holter. The album was preceded by the single Take My Breath in August 2021, with Sacrifice announced as the second single.

The meaning of this song and the music video is deep. The peeling away of the alter ego that is the shell of the self ie the adult body. The shell that terrifies others spewing butterflies which are colorful and complex lies, creating monsters which are lies that have spun out of control, making you feel invincible the example being jumping out of the window and hitting the pavement and not feeling it, and being trapped between that car and the pole. All of this pain is absorbed by the shell. The self deep inside that is nothing more than a scared child begging for love and attention. Layers this video has. Layers. I can see why Jim Carrey joined this project. It's exactly about what he has been talking about for the last few years. Right in the beginning when they talk about brewing mushroom tea which is a psychotherapy where as detachment from reality causes self reflection and then the ego ceases to communicate with the selfs desire causing regression that helps remove the ego from the self. It can save your life and get rid of a distorted self image bringing you absolute peace of mind. It is traumatizing to realize that you have been relying on your ego to communicate thought into action your whole life though. That part is hard to get over. It makes you face your demons. But this video is so great removing this ignorance through expression. I love it. Very deep and psychologically artistic. I also love the part where he kisses that girl, but then the girl turns into an inflated him. Symbolizing that he contaminates everything he touches or tries to love with himself. Just a little FYI. This is legitimately what a bad mushroom trip is like, metaphorically speaking. But, do note that a bad trip doesn't necessarily mean bad results. For instance, you may never know your true self until you have had a chemical lobotomy of the ego. This in itself can cause a lot of mental discomfort because for a time you will be stuck in a thought in a cycle and will never accomplish fulfilling that desire. It will make you feel like you are dying. Like your heart is stopping and your skin is peeling off. But this is a rebirth if you can manage to get through it. It is a process which needs guidance. Never attempt it alone. You will need comfort to keep you grounded in reality. If you have none to help you with that, do not attempt to do this... You will go too far and will never come back.

When you look past the imagery but you think about it. It’s actually really beautiful and sad. Abel/the Weeknd is really allowing himself to open up to someone for the first time despite everything his past (the woman in the car/sewers) his fame (the big balloon) etc his own issues fighting against him. And even if e gets rejected by someone who sees him as a horrific mess deep down he recognises he’s a still a scared kid who is just really broken (literally in this video) and wants to be loved and accepted and is terrified of being hurt/rejected. That’s a crazy amount of growth and maturity from the Weeknd persona on kissland and trilogy as great as they are.

The first time he recovered in a hospital, he was wearing a mask and fully suited. He was different from other patients around him, whose faces were lifeless and ghost-like, implying that he got fixed up from something in the past, or so he thought because all the people who were trying to fix him thought he wasn't ready (his arms fell off before jumping out of the window).

With his new persona, he returned to the world that once scarred him. Once he was out, the world continued to crush him again and again, quite literally (car crash, balloon inflated, the tunnel became narrow), implying what he was going through in life at the time was crude. i am relieved i aint the only one who noticed how melancholy and hurt he was when he debuted up to now where he accepts his fate a lot better, has some maturity and guidance in his life and sounds happy with the 80's retrowave sound. Out Of Time is my favorite track on here for these reasons and i always preface it with a tale by quincy. the acceptance, the ability to remember without becoming a complete wreck. and even in this video, how it shows all the damage he's done and absorbed hidden deep within his mask and when he shows people his true self, they don't want anything to do with it. however, it all served as a pathway to self-love and forgiveness, rebuilding one's self from the ground up and making peace with the destruction that lay in our footprints ad it doesn't truly define the person we desperately desire to be. this album is a masterpiece and it gives me starboy vibes as i find weeknd super relatable and as if he's answering the same questions i have in my life rn. i like happy weeknd and i doubly admire seeing how far he's come as an artist. easily my favorite artist. i hate to toss the GOAT term around but in my book, he's earned it. - 9.5/10

I also saw the child limbs as a way to show he's being born again because this album's whole story was a radio station u listened to whilst in purgatory because he died at the end of after hours from the OD right? Hence the old man Abel thru out dawn FM looking back on things.. now he's slowly being reborn a new Abel where he will reinvent himself again for the final album in this trilogy and be reborn a new man! The butterfly symbolism in particular paints a really clear picture of the emotional, and psychological rebirth. The rotting of the face could be interpreted multiple ways. This man is a true creative. The inflating face could be interpreted as his ego, and the rotting could be how he actually felt about the situation, but was unable to actually find a way to express it in the moment. The explosion, and subsequent banging on the door with his head could be his regret, and how he desperately wants another chance. He has effectively been reborn, he has become like a child again. The self awareness this process brought compounds the guilt he feels, and or felt during the time he made a sacrifice to get himself to where he is now.

Love how this all connects to everything that's happened before. Most of the references are from the After Hours album, like Abel coming out of the elevator is a reference to After Hours and In your eyes. The mask and the fallen head is a reference to Too Late. Him walking in the streets as a cartoon is a reference to Snowchild.
The whole video is about being scared to show your true face/true feelings/true self to someone for the fear of being rejected. And throughout the video, Abel is in fact, being rejected by all the women who see him, the woman he likes included.
The whole theme with the insects is also a metaphor of festering wounds, decaying bodies/things but then "coming out of your shell" and starting anew, heal.
The Abel we see at the start is old!Abel. He's close to his own metaphoric ending because of old/frail exterior caused by his inability to show his true self to those he loves (including his fans). He's not really old, he's like "I'm close to the end" emotionally, but he can't take it anymore and the armor breaks and shows his inner child, the part that he is hiding but that is also making him feel pain/like a monster. When he turns into a child, the festering wounds turn into something new. It's a butterfly metaphor. The butterfly is not beautiful at the beginning, then it comes out of its shell and finally turns into something beautiful and new, and spreads its wings to fly. I believe that's what Abel is implying with this video. He's opening up to us but he's also hinting that his music is ever evolving, something that heals him and that enables him to show his true self.

Anybody else noticed the woman in the sewer is the one from Belong to the world & the woman The Weeknd held in his arm in the street (+the one pruning her plants) might be the same from Out of time? Seems apparent that there is one he moved on from cause it's no longer his reality / a reality he wants to be a part of; as we see him run away from her. On the flip side the one he's trying to reach out to is shown as the one he wants in his life... The type of desire he has is no longer a lifeless attraction to someone who will never able to share a special bond with him like in his older tracks. He's actually asking how can he show up in this connection! Id even argue that he's putting the effort into it too (the whole video is a journey to see her regardless the trials) Yet we find him by the end of this video not being quite able to get the response he's longing for. When Abel/ The Weeknd combines his love for Japanese anime and popculture - specifically Akira, Junji Ito esque horror, and even frickin’ Mothra in one pretty intense MV that’s like something from Aeon Flux and Liquid Television, it’s definitely going to be a hit.

Haven’t see music storytelling in music videos like this since Daft Punk’s Discovery/ Interstella 5555, so this was refreshing and awesome to see after Out of Time. Well done!!!

Under all the vapid indulgence, toxic liasons, drug filled benders and emotionally abusive relationships is just a little boy that wants to be loved. I think the moth might represent Bella, and I think when After Hours made him even more famous than he was, he kept getting bigger and bigger and crushed Bella, and then the after house character almost killed him too, and exploded like his ego exploded? The video starts with him in a hospital pinned down by nurses with no faces...to his left is a corpse placed there to show the audience that this isn't your regular hospital that treats patients...this whole scene symbolises his mind...it shows you that he wants things in his life to change hence his aggression to get out of that room but another part of him believes things are far too gone (it's already too late)...his better off staying there with his regrets till his dying breath...the mask he wears is his alter ego (The Weeknd) a persona he has used his whole professional life to hide the person he really is inside...he jumps out of the window knowing that the fake body/layer on top of his ACTUAL body will cushion his fall furthermore proving that he uses his alter ego (the weeknd) to fight his own hardships cause his always been scared to open up and be vulnerable...The giant moth symbolises change/time over the years...he stands there motionless as "life" (the gast of wind) throws people his way and finally a woman crosses his path...He holds her (shows genuine love and feelings for her) but she deflates (displaying that relationships do sometimes hurt the other person) he tries inflating her back (show emotional care and support) but she morphes into his alter ego, additionally showing how (the weeknd persona) haunts him and subsequently ruins everything he tries to love...the video finally ends with him back at the woman's doors (begging for forgiveness) all his limps are torn off and his face completely dismembered...the woman peeks through the door and see's him (a person who is completely broken and in need of help both symbolically and literally) she closes the door and his outer skin finally sheds off revealing a child (meaning he never even got to grow up in the first place and has used his fake layer/body (persona) his entire life to fight all the battles he was too scared to face as himself)

what a fantastic animation, I was immediately reminded of the child self when that little arm was shown.. this video captures the logic and sequentiality of dreams so so well, really beautiful. I remember having a dream once after a relationship ended, where I stepped out of my skin and held it before me like a strange flesh suit of dry tough skin, it felt cathartic
