WHEN WE MET ON THE FRONT PORCH OF HER FATHER’S HOME
AND SHE SAID THAT SHE’D NEVER LEAVE ME
SO I SAID I’D NEVER LET HER GO
HEY!
I DON’T WANNA BREAK DOWN WHY I’M FEELING SO LONELY WHEN YOU’RE AROUND
I DON’T WANNA BREAK DOWN WHY I’M FEELING SO LONELY WHEN YOU’RE AROUND
SHE’S MAKING IT UP THAT SHE WAS MISTREATED SOMEHOW
I DON’T KNOW…
…BUT I GOTTA KILL HER ANYWAY
WELL I TRIED MY BEST TO MAKE HER LISTEN
BUT SHE LEFT ME LONG AGO
HEY!
I DON’T WANNA BREAK DOWN WHY I’M FEELING SO LONELY WHEN YOUR’E AROUND
HEY!
I DON’T WANNA BREAK DOWN WHY I’M FEELING SO LONELY WHEN YOUR’E AROUND
TELL ME WE’RE THE GREATEST GIRL
DON’T YOU DISCONNECT ME
DON’T YOU DISCONNECT MY WORLD
PUT OUT THE FIRE NOW
I’M GONNA TAKE YOU HIGHER NOW
HEY!
I DON’T WANNA BREAK DOWN
HEY!
I DON’T WANNA BREAK DOWN
WHY I’M
FEELING SO LONELY
I’M FEELING SO LONELY
I’M FEELING SO LONELY WHEN YOU’RE AROUND
The Whigs's song "So Lonely" is an emotionally charged rock tune about the push and pull of a tumultuous relationship. The singer describes his lover as someone who takes him back in time to when they first met, in 1960, on the front porch of her father’s home. She promised him she would never leave him, and he pledged to never let her go. However, there is an underlying sense of sadness and isolation, as the singer admits that he feels lonely even when his lover is around. There is an unspoken tension between them, as she claims to have been mistreated and he struggles to make her understand.
The chorus of the song repeats the line "I don't wanna break down why I'm feeling so lonely when you're around" twice, emphasizing the conflicting emotions the singer experiences in his relationship. He tries to persuade his lover to stay with him and affirms that they are the "greatest girl," but he fears being disconnected from her world. The song's intense climax features the singer urging his lover to put out the fire and promising to take her higher.
Overall, "So Lonely" captures the complexities of a passionate but challenging relationship, exploring themes of trust, isolation, and communication breakdowns.
