Stables has been turning heads in all the right places since 2003: a first album Krülle Bol produced by John Parish , singles (Two Wooden Spoons) released by Rob da Bank’s label Sunday Best and a long-awaited second album on Dreamboat Records in 2010. Wriggle out the Restless was born out of a new, slower way of working. Gestated over a long period the album has drawn on This Is The Kit’s many musical friends (Rozi Plain [[label]Fence ], Jim Barr [of Portishead ] Francois [Fence] and The Liftmen [[label]Twisted Nerve]) to fill out their delicate music into a full, robust sound. “The aim was to have fun playing with people who’s work I really like” says Kate “the more you exchange and share with people the better things get and the more you learn.”
This Is The Kit perform regularly as a two-piece with Stables on vocals, guitar and banjo, and Vernon on violin, guitar, bass and percussion.

Spinney
This Is the Kit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
and it's footprints in the snow
you've been mixing up some mischeif
you've been weaving up some woe
so we both begin to fidget
and we both begin to twitch
and so wriggle out the restless
now it's time to dig your teeth in
cause it's getting on for day
and the sun is creeping upwards
getting ready for to say
i will warm it i will melt it
it will wash it's self away
i'm a river watch me breathing
not one drop of me will stay
and it's three times through the spinney
and it's footprints in the mud
The song "Spinney" by This Is the Kit is a contemplative and introspective piece that embodies the feeling of being trapped in a never-ending cycle of negative thoughts and emotions. The song's first verse gives us the setting for this repetitive cycle - a "spinney" or a small wooded area that the singer has traversed three times, each time leaving footprints behind in the snow. The second verse talks about how the singer is responsible for their own troubles, having "mixed up some mischief" and "woven up some woe", leading to them fidgeting and twitching from the restlessness and the itch that they can't seem to scratch.
The chorus of the song is a turning point, where the singer decides to dig their teeth in and face their troubles head-on, because "it's getting on for day" and the sun is rising, symbolizing a new dawn, a chance to start over. The bridge brings us back to the theme of cyclical, transient nature, where the river is a metaphor for life, always flowing, washing things away, never staying. The final verse reiterates the setting of the spinney, but this time, the footprints are in the mud, signifying an end to the snowy, frozen cycle.
Overall, "Spinney" is a beautifully crafted piece with understated instrumentation and poetic lyrics that delve deep into the human psyche and explore the themes of introspection and renewal.
