Stables has been turning heads in all the right places since 2003: a first album Krülle Bol produced by John Parish , singles (Two Wooden Spoons) released by Rob da Bank’s label Sunday Best and a long-awaited second album on Dreamboat Records in 2010. Wriggle out the Restless was born out of a new, slower way of working. Gestated over a long period the album has drawn on This Is The Kit’s many musical friends (Rozi Plain [[label]Fence ], Jim Barr [of Portishead ] Francois [Fence] and The Liftmen [[label]Twisted Nerve]) to fill out their delicate music into a full, robust sound. “The aim was to have fun playing with people who’s work I really like” says Kate “the more you exchange and share with people the better things get and the more you learn.”
This Is The Kit perform regularly as a two-piece with Stables on vocals, guitar and banjo, and Vernon on violin, guitar, bass and percussion.

White Ash Cut
This Is the Kit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Blow away sea foam and ocean spray
Blow away keeping the girls at bay
And when good wind blow away
Blow away unwanted guests that stay
Blow away misguided ships that stray
Less count of all the ones in between
All of the colors they've never seen
Those black eyes trawl the sky
Black damper the day was dry
Black fingernails holding on too tight
Two white ash cut the sea
Pulling on wood from a fine old tree
White-legged water bug skimmed the deep
And would color her eye?
Knows you're pursuing her day and night
Knowing and seeing in dark and light
And open my tea? wide
Jaws where there's nowhere to hide inside
Would it against giant bone collide
So when good wind blow away
Blow away sea foam and ocean spray
Blow away misguided ships that stray
The song "White Ash Cut" by This Is the Kit seems to be about the power of the wind and how it can blow away unwanted things, people or thoughts. The opening lines of the song describe the wind that is strong enough to blow away sea foam, ocean spray and even girls who might be trying to get close. The wind is seen as a positive force, one that can clear the way and bring change, as it blows away unwanted guests, misguided ships, and even stray thoughts.
The next part of the verse talks about colors and how they change depending on the light and the sea. Blue, grey, green, and all the colors in between are mentioned, but also the ones that people have never seen. The following line speaks of black eyes that "trawl" the sky, suggesting an all-seeing power or an omniscient being who is watching us. Then there's the imagery of black dampening the day and holding on too tight, which can be seen as a metaphor for depression, anxiety, or any other negative emotion that can weigh us down.
The second verse contains more vivid imagery, this time centered around nature. Two white ash trees are cutting through the sea, pulling on wood from a fine old tree. A white-legged water bug skims the deep, which creates an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The next line, "And would color her eye?" seems to refer to someone who's being pursued by an admirer, and whether or not she's aware of it. The last line of the verse mentions "knowing and seeing in dark and light," hinting at the idea that there's more to someone than what meets the eye.
Overall, the song seems to be about the power of the elements and how they shape our lives. It speaks of the wind that can bring change and renewal, the colors that can be both beautiful and elusive, and the beings that exist in nature that we might not even notice. It suggests that there's always more to discover and explore, and that we should be open to new experiences and perspectives.
