Stables has been turning heads in all the right places since 2003: a first album Krülle Bol produced by John Parish , singles (Two Wooden Spoons) released by Rob da Bank’s label Sunday Best and a long-awaited second album on Dreamboat Records in 2010. Wriggle out the Restless was born out of a new, slower way of working. Gestated over a long period the album has drawn on This Is The Kit’s many musical friends (Rozi Plain [[label]Fence ], Jim Barr [of Portishead ] Francois [Fence] and The Liftmen [[label]Twisted Nerve]) to fill out their delicate music into a full, robust sound. “The aim was to have fun playing with people who’s work I really like” says Kate “the more you exchange and share with people the better things get and the more you learn.”
This Is The Kit perform regularly as a two-piece with Stables on vocals, guitar and banjo, and Vernon on violin, guitar, bass and percussion.

The Turnip
This Is the Kit Lyrics

And there was a place
When we were one
And it was so still
And it was so dark
And the place was my tum
And there came a place
When the bun was well done
We had waited the time
We had counted it out
We had done all the sums
So they tried to coax
With the needles and smoke
And they stuck in the pins
And they burned my toe
And the moon was pink
And then the moon turned dark
You had started to start
You had started to start
You decided to start
And the moon was dark
Oh, and your power
Oh, where should I start?
Start to explain
How lucky we are
Cause he stayed with me
And he stayed with you
Holding on all the the time
And he stayed awake
And he didn't sleep
And the next day we cried
Cause the turnip had turned
These lyrics from the This Is the Kit song "The Turnip" tell the story of childbirth, from the moment of conception to the birth of a child. The first verse paints a picture of the womb, describing it as still and dark. The second verse describes the moment when the baby is ready to be born, when "the bun was well done." The third verse speaks of the pains of labor, with the imagery of needles and smoke, and the singer's burning toe.
The fourth verse is when the baby is finally born, and the moon shifts from pink to dark, signifying the shift in time. The next verse expresses gratitude to the people who were there to help during the childbirth, most likely the child's father or a close family member. The last line, "Cause the turnip had turned," is a metaphor for the birth of the baby, who has now turned from a growing vegetable in the womb to a living, breathing child.
Overall, the song is a beautiful and poetic retelling of the miracle of life and the process of childbirth. It captures the wonder and pain of bringing a child into the world, and it does so in a way that is both intimate and universal.
