Stables has been turning heads in all the right places since 2003: a first album Krülle Bol produced by John Parish , singles (Two Wooden Spoons) released by Rob da Bank’s label Sunday Best and a long-awaited second album on Dreamboat Records in 2010. Wriggle out the Restless was born out of a new, slower way of working. Gestated over a long period the album has drawn on This Is The Kit’s many musical friends (Rozi Plain [[label]Fence ], Jim Barr [of Portishead ] Francois [Fence] and The Liftmen [[label]Twisted Nerve]) to fill out their delicate music into a full, robust sound. “The aim was to have fun playing with people who’s work I really like” says Kate “the more you exchange and share with people the better things get and the more you learn.”
This Is The Kit perform regularly as a two-piece with Stables on vocals, guitar and banjo, and Vernon on violin, guitar, bass and percussion.

Waterproof
This Is the Kit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
the planets they have tugged on thee
but they do it to us all
the universe gets tough and small
so dubbin up your boots
make sure you're waterproof
and fasten up your coat
the weather it brings change
and how predictable
that it should timble in this way
and
we even saw it come
and getting closer every day
and then it lifted off the roof
no longer waterproof
the rain it tumbling in
another storm begins
another storm of love and truth
so dubbin up your boots
make sure you're waterproof
and fasten up your coat
the weather it brings change
the wind it brings us change and blows
In "Waterproof," This Is the Kit delivers a song about the fragility of life and the need for resilience. Kate Stables' lyrics explore the unpredictable nature of the universe; how the planets tug on us all and how change is inevitable. She begins by acknowledging the grand scale at which life exists, and how this large scale can make us feel small, placing us at the mercy of the universe. She advises listeners to "dubbin up your boots" and "make sure you're waterproof," suggesting that preparation and adaptability are crucial to weathering life's storms. As the song progresses, Stables hones in on a more immediate, personal issue: the roof of her home has become unsound due to a predictable lack of upkeep, and the rain is tumbling in with force. Stables notes how this storm of rain and truth has begun, perhaps meaning that the leaky roof is an admission of her personal failings that she must confront. Despite this, the advice to be prepared and ready for change remains pertinent.
There are a few possible interpretations of "Waterproof." The notion that the universe is tough and small enough to tug on us could be a metaphor for a harsh reality or a metaphor for the interconnectedness of all things. On one hand, the song may be a contemplation on the fragility of human existence, acknowledging that life is unpredictable and that we must be prepared for when things inevitably go wrong. On the other hand, the song might be interpreted as a call to arms to embrace life's unpredictability with open arms.
