Stairway To Heaven
Tiny Tim With Brave Combo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for
[Chorus]
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And you know sometimes words have two meanings
In the tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
[Chorus]
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
[Chorus]
And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter
And it makes me wonder
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the may queen
Yes there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
Your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can't you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
[Chorus]
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for
[Chorus]
"Stairway to Heaven" is a song by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, but is interpreted here by Tiny Tim. The song is known for its iconic guitar riff and mystical lyrics that have sparked many interpretations over the years. The song is said to be about a woman who is seeking a life of material wealth and is willing to trade her soul for it. She is buying a stairway to heaven, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for her attempts to reach the afterlife or spiritual enlightenment through material means.
The lyrics also touch on the idea that things are not always as they seem – the lady wants to be sure of what she is getting into before committing. Additionally, the song explores themes of ambition and the pursuit of gold or material wealth not being the key to happiness.
The lyrics in the song have been subject to much speculation and interpretation over the years. Some believe the song has deeper spiritual or mystical meanings, with references to the occult and secret societies. Others see it as a commentary on the dangers of excess and materialism. Overall, the song has become an iconic symbol of the 1970s rock era, inspiring countless covers and references in popular culture.

I love this record and am disappointed that it isn't on Spotify. The cover of Hey Jude is similarly great. I have such a profound memory of the first time I saw Brave Combo as a kid--a self-described "Nuclear Polka" band from Denton, playing on the great lawn of the local university. My mind was blown and I don't think I have ever danced so hard in my life. When I heard that they were doing a record with the eccentric Tiny Tim, I could hardly wait.

He was so much better by this point, in his 70s, than when he first hit, in hiis 40s. He learned how to sing, but also how to be a showman while staying true to music.
Bravo, and RIP, Herbert!
