Talking Seattle Grunge Blues
Todd Snider Lyrics

[Chorus]
Hey, hey, my, my
Rock and roll will never die
Hang your hair down in your eye
You'll make a million dollars

Well I was in this band goin' nowhere fast
We sent out demos but everybody passed
So one day we finally took the plunge
Moved out to Seattle to play some grunge
Washington state that is
Space needle
Eddie vedder
Mudhoney

Now to fit in fast we wear flannel shirts
We turn our amps up until it hurts
We've got bad attitudes and what's more
When we play we stare straight down at the floor
Wowee
Pretty scary
How pensive
How totally alternative

Now to fit in on the Seattle scene
You've gotta do somethin' they ain't never seen
So thinkin' up a gimmick one day
We decided to be the only band that wouldn't play a note
Under any circumstances
Silence
Music's original alternative
Root's grunge

Well we spread the word through the underground
That we were the hottest new thing in town
The record guy came out to see us one day
And just like always we didn't play
It knocked him out
He said he loved our work
He said he loved our work but he wasn't sure if he could sell a record
With nothing on it
I said tell 'em we're from Seattle
He advanced us two and a half million dollars

[Chorus]

Well they made us do a video but that wasn't tough
'cause we just filmed ourselves smashin' stuff
It was kinda weird 'cause there was no music
But MTV said they'd love to use it

The kids went wild, the kids went nuts
Rolling stone gave us a five-star review said we played with guts
We're scorin' chicks, takin' drugs
Then we got asked to play MTV unplugged
You should have seen it
We went right out there and refused to do acoustical versions of the
Electrical songs we had refused to record in the first place
Then we smashed our shit

Well we blew 'em away at the Grammy's show
By refusing to play and refusing to go
And then just when we thought fame would last forever
Along come this band that wasn't even together
Now that's alternative
Now that's alternative to alternative
I feel stupid
And contagious

Well our band got dropped and that ain't funny
'cause we're all hooked on drugs but we're outta money
So the other day I called up the band
I said boys I've taken all I can
Shave off your goatees

Pack the van
We're goin' back to Athens

Overall Meaning

Todd Snider's "Talking Seattle Grunge..." is a satirical take on the grunge music scene that emerged in Seattle, Washington in the early 1990s. The song begins with the familiar rock chant of "hey, hey, my, my, rock and roll will never die," and then goes on to tell the story of a band that moves from somewhere else to Seattle to become part of the grunge movement. They adopt the fashion and attitude, wearing flannel shirts and staring at the floor while they play. But in order to make themselves stand out even more, they become the only band that refuses to play, instead choosing to embrace silence as the "original alternative."

The humor in the song comes from the singer's understanding of the absurdity of the grunge scene, and the irony of how his band becomes successful by doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing. He sends up the industry and the spectacle of fame, and the way that music and image often become confused. The chorus is both a tribute to the enduring power of rock and roll, but also a reminder of its perpetual reinvention and transformation.

Overall, the song is an irreverent and playful critique of the grunge scene, but also a homage to the enduring power of rock and roll.

Silence music's original alternative. Wonderful songwriting and perspective. Todd's a unique visionary!

brian5o

You have to give Mtv credit, they went their own way. Instead of using silence as music’s alternative, they used ‘reality’ TV shows. That’s innovation! 😔

A Is For Apple 🍎

Terrific "talking blues" Dylan homage happening here.
Super observant of the music scene at the time and intelligent lyrics. Even better now in hindsight of 30 years.

Thanks for the time capsule, Todd. ✌

Completely relevant when it came out....and quite nostalgic today.

dieselscience

2021 How relevant ... again only this time even more so.

Milk Ape Is Milky

I vividly remember this being on the air, briefly. Back in the 90s, as a dyed in the wool, Nirvana hating, headbanging Hessian, I thought this was a wicked piece of commentary on "alt rock", which is what it was called at the time. It wasn't really referred to as "grunge" until the later 90's / early 2000s. But I didn't end up hating Nirvana forever. I had tickets to the In Utero tour, but Kurt didn't make it.

NerfedNuke

@Milk Ape Is Milky "But Kurt didn't make it.."
>THAT< is the perfect encapsulation of this song.

dave idmarx

@Milk Ape Is Milky It was called grunge pretty much from the outset.

Milk Ape Is Milky

@dave idmarx That wasn't my experience, in the US. I do remember hearing grunge used as a term in the UK in the late '90s

Back in '94 I heard this song on my way to work and thought it was awesome. Since radio's repetitive I figured I would hear it again. I never did. Not once did they play it again. I never knew the name of the artist nor the song and no one I knew ever heard of it. 2 years ago I asked a question on an answers site and someone finally answered! ďťż I can't believe it took 17 freaking years to finally hear this song again! I'm finally at peace... and the song's still awesome =) Thanks for posting =)
