Purple People
Tori Amos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well hey do you do Judo
When they surround you
A little mental yoga
Will they disappear

It's grim but never dubious as motives go
One thing she'll always promises
Promises is a show
Thunder wishes it could be the Snow
Wishes it could be as loved as she can be
These gifts are here
For her
For you
For me

I watch me be this other thing and never know
If I'm marooned or where the purple people go
Then lily white matricide
From vicious words
It doesn't leave a scratch
So therefore no one's hurt

Thunder wishes it could be the Snow
Wishes it could be as loved as she can be
These gifts are here
For her
For you
For me

And don't you know
The nurses make it clear
Just when you've escape
You have yourself to fear
A restaurant that never has to close
Breakfast, every hour
It could save the world

So hey do you do Judo in your finery
An angel's face is tricky to wear constantly

Thunder wishes it could be the Snow
Wishes it could be as loved as she can be
These gifts are here
For her
For you
For me

For her
For her

Overall Meaning

This song is a curious blend of seemingly unrelated ideas that are woven together to create an enigmatic masterpiece. The first verse talks about using mental techniques like Judo to make people disappear when they surround you. It creates an image of someone who is either being harassed or wants to protect themselves from potential harm. Tori Amos has always been open about her experiences with sexual abuse and rape, so it's possible that this verse speaks to that.

The chorus of the song is a beautiful wish for the impossible. Thunder wishes it could be snow, which is essentially a contradiction in terms. But it's a poetic way of yearning for something that can never be attained. It's followed by the line "wishes it could be as loved as she can be," which is a reference to the female protagonist of the song. The gifts that are here, for her, you, and me, are the innumerable possibilities that we're all born with.

The second verse of the song is where it gets really cryptic. Tori Amos describes watching herself be someone else, which is something that most people can relate to. It could be a reference to the way society often tries to mold us into certain roles or an observation about how we change our behavior to fit in with certain groups. The line "If I'm marooned or where the purple people go" is utterly baffling, but it's also what makes the song so fascinating. It's open to interpretation and invites the listener to imbue it with their meaning. The last two lines of the verse refer to how hurtful words can be even though they don't leave a physical mark.

this song literally changed my life. I was 15 at the time. super religious. my brother's girlfriend brought this b side to our house, and my bro said "listen to Spark, it's so good!". So, I took the cd, fell in love with Purple People, and listened to it on repeat for days. I came out of the experience an entirely different person. I left my religion and turned toward music instead. Best spiritual decision I've ever made.

@Neil Stoodley this version is particularly haunting, when that piano line comes in, it's like a warm, velvet blanket. Pure heaven.

What a powerful message. Music is our own spiritual pathway that is WAY more complex and important than any doctrine! I agree... this song (and this version of this song) is otherworldly. Such an unusual, poetic beauty.
