Purple Rain
Tori Amos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted to one time see you laughing
I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain

Purple rain purple rain
Purple rain purple rain
Purple rain purple rain

I only wanted to see you bathing in the purple rain

I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend
Baby I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end

Purple rain purple rain
Purple rain purple rain
Purple rain purple rain

I only wanted to see you underneath the purple rain

Honey I know, I know, I know times are changing
It's time we all reach out for something new
That means you to
You say you want a leader
But you can't seem to make up your mind
I think you better close it
And let me guide you to the purple rain

Purple rain purple rain
Purple rain purple rain

If you know what I'm singing about up here
C'mon raise your hand

Purple rain purple rain

I only want to see you, only want to see you
In the purple rain

Overall Meaning

In Tori Amos's cover of "Purple Rain", the first verse explains that the singer never intended to hurt the person they are singing to. They only wanted to see that person happy and perhaps even carefree for one moment. It appears that the relationship between the two has ended, which is expressed in the following lines. The singer outlines that they never wanted to be a weekend fling but only desired to be friends with this person. However, circumstances led to the end of their friendship, and it's clear that the singer missed them to some extent.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the color purple and how it relates to the rain. It's unclear what this means exactly, but repeated phrases alluding to the "purple rain" suggest an intense emotional experience- perhaps happiness or sadness. The singer makes it clear they only wanted to see the person they are singing to under the purple rain, emphasizing a very personal connection with the phenomenon.

In the final verse, the singer acknowledges that times are changing and that everyone is searching for something new. They offer to guide the other person through this transition, calling back to the purple rain imagery. The final, repeated line of the song reiterates that the singer only wants to see this person under the purple rain- it's unclear if this is metaphorical, literally referring to rain that is purple in color, or some other kind of symbolism.

WWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUU !!!!!!!!!

Moving, Tearing, Exceptional and Fabulous interpretation as only a True Goddess of the piano singing as Tori Amos can realize.

In my opinion, Tori is the Greatest Pianist Singer Author Composer and Performer of All Times and it is a privilege to live in her time compared to future generations who will unfortunately not have the pleasure of seeing and listening to her in real life.

Many thanks to our Most Precious Tori. ( traduction Reverso )

Tori’s voice is half prayer and the other half a lamentation. I have to psych myself up to listen to Tori because it takes a few days to recover.

I've loved Tori since the 1st time I heard "Silent All These Years". Personally relating to parts of that song made it all the more emotional. "Purple Rain" is one of my fave songs by Prince, and Tori's version is hauntingly beautiful.

tasharch

So respectful to all the covers she does. She really drills down into all the lyrics to pull out the meaning and intent.

One of my absolute favorite Tori covers of all time. Always brings a tear to my eyes, but especially today after Prince's passing. He was truly talented.

If anybody was going to nail this song, written by his father based on PIANO lyrics, we know who has the voice and GRAND PIANO TALENT! RIP. PRINCE.

This is probably my favorite cover of Purple Rain. I'm not really a Tori Amos fan but the first time I heard this cover it stopped me dead in my tracks.
