Riot Poof
Tori Amos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know what you know so you go break the terror of the urban spell
This alliance you say 'I'm on the threshold of greatness girl' so you burn
Your pagoda through the congo till there's a broken bond
On the birth of the search white trash
My native son
It will all find its way in time
Blossom riot poof
You know what you know so you go chain her to your flow
She bites through your lean dried meatas she's
Going to the movie show
In a bath of gliter and a tiny shiver
She crawls through your lava sea
Black sahara
I'm stepping into your space oddity
It will all find its way in time
Blossom riot poof
The sun is warming
My man is moistening
On the bomb

On the bond
On the bomb

Overall Meaning

In the opening verse of Tori Amos's song Riot Poof, she addresses the idea of breaking free from the constraints of society by boldly going against the standard expectations placed upon individuals. Tori sings, “You know what you know so you go break the terror of the urban spell”. The reference to a terror implies a sense of fear caused by the restrictions placed upon individuals in urban environments. Tori suggests that one can break this spell by escaping the chains that bind them, represented by the phrase “chain her to your flow”. If an individual can break free from these societal constraints, they can be on the threshold of greatness. However, Tori warns that this journey may come with its own difficulties, as symbolized by the burning of one’s pagoda as they travel through the Congo. The verse ends with Tori stating that, through all of these trials, the individual will blossom and rise up with a “riot poof”. Essentially, Tori is encouraging her listeners to pursue their goals, despite the obstacles that may come their way.

The second verse of the song continues with this metaphor of journeying through a difficult and at times dangerous terrain. The woman in the song is depicted as being powerful and full of energy, as she bites through the lean dried meat and crawls through the lava sea. This powerful imagery is meant to represent the idea that, even amidst challenging circumstances, one has the ability to persevere and manifest their goals. The repetition of the phrase “on the bond” implies that, despite any challenges the individual may face, they will always have a foundation to rely upon. Specifically, the use of the word bond may refer to a spiritual or emotional connection that keeps one grounded and stable. Whether it’s breaking free from societal norms or traversing a desert, Tori Amos’ Riot Poof encourages individuals to stay strong, trust their instincts, and believe in their ability to manifest their dreams.

BlossomRiotPoof

She's practically opera singing but she's still kicking ass! How is this possible, you may ask? Well, because she is Tori Amos.

MithraMusic

Why tf is everyone jumping on Eduardo lmao he's just saying that the original comment makes opera sound like a bad thing even though it isn't!

Eduardo Garcia

Oh my god, sometimes I have to remember that people can't understand the syntax of their own language. I was criticizing BlossomRiotPoof for using "but" in his sentence, which implies opposition, like, you can't kick ass if you're singing opera, which I disagreed.

MySensualWorld

@Eduardo Garcia ignorant comment! Opera can be full of fire and passion their are thousands of Operas! Tori is not really singing an Opera but Operatically !

Eduardo Garcia

That doesn't make sense. Opera singing is just nice.

good heavens! i remember her performing this on the 5.5 weeks tour before Venus was released, having no idea what this song was, then repeating that ending tune nonstop in my head so i wouldn’t forget it, and then madly searching the album for this song only to find the recorded version was quite different. this live performance has stuck in my head for years, and so glad to find this! agree with others who have said this NEEDS to be released. has it??
