Trenches Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I grow tired and sick
As my lips touch the blood and my teeth the flesh
I have lied again
The lost abandoned
I know, I know, the pain can make you patiently shut down
Sitting in front of the whole assembly
I grow tired and sick
I have lied again
I wait for you to run
The sinking feeling must be severed
The lyrics to Trenches’ song Sacrament are quite powerful, and contain a depth of meaning that is both thought-provoking and complex. The song begins with the singer sitting in front of an assembly, feeling tired and sick. As he partakes in the sacrament, his conscience troubles him deeply. He describes how his lips touch the blood and his teeth the flesh, and how he has lied again. This speaks to the idea that the sacrament is meant to be a symbolic representation of the forgiveness of Christ, and that by lying the singer is disgracing this holy symbol.
The next line of the song is especially poignant: “The lost abandoned”. This line speaks to the idea that those who have sinned and feel lost are often the ones who need Christ the most. The singer goes on to say that he knows the pain can make one “patiently shut down”, perhaps indicating that he has become numb to the guilt and shame he feels. Finally, he waits for someone to run, indicating that he knows his sin has made him unworthy of forgiveness.
Overall, the lyrics to Sacrament are a powerful commentary on the nature of sin and redemption. The singer is struggling with feelings of guilt and shame, and is wrestling with the idea of whether or not he is worthy of forgiveness. The imagery of the sacrament is used to underscore this struggle, and the final line of the song is both haunting and thought-provoking.

Sitting in front of the whole assembly
Being present in front of everyone
I grow tired and sick
Feeling exhausted and unwell
As my lips touch the blood and my teeth the flesh
Having blood and flesh being presented to me
I have lied again
I've deceived someone again
The lost abandoned
Those who have been left behind
I know, I know, the pain can make you patiently shut down
The agony can cause you to close down progressively
Sitting in front of the whole assembly
Being present in front of everyone
I grow tired and sick
Feeling exhausted and unwell
As my lips touch the blood and my teeth the flesh
Having blood and flesh being presented to me
I have lied again
I've deceived someone again
I wait for you to run
I expect you to leave
The sinking feeling must be severed
The dreadful sensation needs to be stopped
