The Nameless

Riku sees Ansem as the representation of all his failures and moments of weakness. For that reason, he's terrified of the sight of Ansem during Chain of Memories, so much, that even after learning that darkness won't corrupt him as long as he doesn't give in to it, he puts a blindfold during the whole year of 358/2 Days out of fear of seeing him again. He doesn't want to be reminded that he failed his friends and caused them so suffering.

By the time Kh2 starts, Riku has gotten to a point where he now sees himself as irredeemable, which is why he transforms into Ansem again despite the latter no longer being in control. Even through he has learned to control the darkness, he still sees himself as a traitor and someone unworthy of forgiveness. Instead of reaching out to his friends, he hides from them, and embraces the identity of the villain who tormented him, despite constantly working WITH sora and co. from the shadows.

However, that all begins to change when he reaches the world that never was. Riku is scared out of his mind of meeting Kairi and Sora due to his own perceived unworthiness, but he's proven wrong the instant they recognize him. He might look like Ansem, but Kairi knows that Ansem wouldn't have tried to save her, and knows both her friends deep down well enough that she doesn't even hesitate to guess the man she just met is Riku. She tells him to stay, to not leave, because she still considers him a friend. And while Sora is slower to realize who he's talking to, once he learns it's Riku, he instantly embraces him, and tells him he never wants to lose him again.

In that moment, Riku is shown a forgiveness that he thought he didn't deserve. His friends welcome him back, and don't skip a beat bringing him into the final battle with them. Turning back into his normal body from DiZ's machine is abit of a plot contrivance, but thematically, it marks a moment when Riku starts having faith in himself and his friendships. After the fight with Xemnas, Sora and Riku have a heart to heart in the Realm of Darkness, in which Riku apologizes for everything, and Sora makes it clear that there's no resentment at all for the things that happened in kh1. After all, Sora wasn't just fighting for Kairi, he was trying to save Riku as well.

Wrapping back to Riku's relationship with Ansem, it's at this moment that Riku stops fearing the man who possessed him, because he has finally learned to forgive himself and have faith in the friends who believe in him, and want the best for him. As shown through DDD, Riku still regrets his fall to Xehanort, but by the time he confronts Ansem, he's ready to put all that behind and just focus on improving the future. Riku has forgiven Ansem, because he has forgiven himself as well, and has a very emotional moment when he finally repays Sora for saving him all the way back in the first game, and show him that they're a team now, not rivals anymore.

I love this soundtrack, it really makes you FEEL like Italian Xehanort

Chris The Saiyan Titan

Chris: I almost think this music would go perfect for a game called Alundra 2- A new Legend begins.

The sound of this music just oozes with the exaggerated swagger of a Xehanort

Nime

I swear Ansem and Riku had a pretty unique relationship by the end of it all. I do believe they cared about each other in their own ways, or at least respected each other. They also had the most of a personal connection between all bad guys and good guys (with a messed up start for sure, but it did evolve into something other.. not sure how to explain.) Saying frenemies might not really be right because they where very much still enemies. Xehanort had a pretty personal connection with Ventus and Terra, but it's really not in the same sort of way. I dont know.. I just find the relationship that devolps between Ansem and Riku very interesting. It breaks a bit from the traditional villain hero dynamics you more often see.

Wumbology

I love that Ansem says to Riku, “Your strength is vaster than darkness.” Ansem, the guy with the word darkness in his title, admits that darkness is not the end all, and that Riku’s way is better. What a nice way to end their rivalry.

Elizabeth's Fantasy

I think what your saying is like the friend you love to hate. A gentle hostile relationship.
