Ready to form another band after a five-year hiatus from music, Hailey went to see Grey perform with Mellowdrone. "I had been waiting to meet someone who had her talent and drive," Hailey says. "After hanging out a couple of times, it was obvious we were a great match." For her part, Grey says she was ready to leave behind session work and focus on a creative collaboration. "I've wanted to write and produce my own music, but was too busy touring as a background performer."
The result of their efforts was the EP I See Red, which was recorded over several months in a bedroom at Grey's Los Angeles home. ("Vocals were done in the bathroom," Hailey says, "it was very sexy.") Produced by Grey and mixed by Al Clay (who has worked with the Pixies, Frank Black, and Blur), I See Red, with its laser-sharp melodies, ethereal harmonies, lush string arrangements, and muscular drums, is a great introduction to the duo.
Less than a year after the release of I See Red, Uh Huh Her will unveil their full-length debut, the accessibly melodic Common Reaction, on August 19th. Produced by Al Clay … it was recorded in January at Clay’s L.A. studio, a world away from Grey’s bathroom …. The effort is an extension of the band’s previous musical foundation, as evidenced by focused tracks like "Not a Love Song," "Wait Another Day" and "Explode."
"We wrote a lot of it before we went in the studio, but we wound up re-cutting everything," Grey says of the 11-track album. "We wanted to make a commercially appealing record. The songs aren't specifically poppy but appeal to a wide variety of people."
"Sometimes the song just calls for it and you can't fight the pop," Hailey laughs. "I like that it's eclectic and not just one thing. That bores me in a record. We never wanted this band to be small."
Common Reaction is now available.

I am shattered by the night
Always run where I can and
I hide where I wanna hide
But it feels so right,
I want it tonight
It feels so right
I am caught here
One more time
I know how it feels tonight
I can do nothing about it
But it feels so right,
I want it tonight
You feel so right
I will wait to love you
I will wait another day
For you I'd leave
All this behind
(Oooh)
I will wait for you tonight
I will waste
Another dream on you
Always run to you, run
I will take the long road
But it leads right back to you
Follow you into the sun
I will steal this time for you
But it feels so right
I want it tonight
You feel so right
Oh, I will wait to love you
I will wait another day
For you I'd leave
All this behind
(Oooh)
I will wait for you tonight
I will waste
Another dream on you
Always run to you
I will wait to love you
I will wait another day
For you I'd leave
All this behind
(Oooh)
I will wait for you tonight
I will waste
Another dream on you
Always run to...you, run
The lyrics of Uh Huh Her’s song “Wait Another Day” delve into the theme of love and how it can make us act irrationally and impulsively. The opening lines, “I look at the starlight, I am shattered by the night”, set the tone of the song with a melancholic feel. The singer of the song is running away from something, perhaps a feeling or a person, “Always run where I can and I hide where I wanna hide”. However, despite this, they acknowledge that it feels right, “But it feels so right, I want it tonight”.
As the song progresses, the singer reveals that they have gone out of their mind and are caught in a cycle of repetitive behavior. They are consumed by their desire for this person but feel powerless, “I know how it feels tonight, I can do nothing about it”. However, they are willing to wait for this person to reciprocate their feelings, to “wait another day”. The lines, “For you I’d leave all this behind, I will waste another dream on you, always run to you, run” highlight the central theme of the song – the singer’s unrequited love for this person.
Overall, the melancholic and wistful nature of the lyrics combined with the haunting melody and dreamy vocals of Uh Huh Her’s lead singer, Leisha Hailey, creates a poignant and emotive piece of music.
