thanks

Thanks for the memory
Of things I can't forget, journeys on a jet
Our wond'rous week in Martinique and Vegas and roulette
How lucky I was

And thanks for the memory
Of summers by the sea, dawn in Waikiki
We had a pad in London but we didn't stop for tea
How cozy it was

Now since our breakup I wake up
Alone on a gray morning-after
I long for the sound of your laughter
And then I see the laugh's on me

But, thanks for the memory
Of every touch a thrill, I've been through the mill
I've lived a lot and learned a lot, you loved me not and still
I miss you so much

Thanks for the memory
Of how we used to jog even in a fog
That barbecue in Malibu, away from all the smog
How rainy it was

Thanks for the memory
Of letters I destroyed, books that we enjoyed
Tonight the way things look, I need a book by Sigmund Freud
How brainy he was

Gone are those evenings on Broadway
Together we'd go to a great show
But now I begin with the Late Show
And wish that you were watching, too

I know it's a fallacy
That grown men never cry, baby, that's a lie

We had our bed of roses, but forgot that roses die
And thank you so much

Overall Meaning

The first stanza mentions the great experiences the singer had with his former partner, such as flying on a jet and having a wonderful week in Martinique and Vegas. He expresses gratitude for how lucky he was to have spent those moments with his partner. The second stanza highlights the beauty of their summer days spent by the beach, watching the sunrise in Waikiki and having a cozy pad in London. However, since their breakup, the singer now wakes up alone, missing the sound of his partner's laughter. Yet, he is still grateful for every thrill and lesson learned throughout their journey.

The third and fourth stanzas mention different memorable moments shared with his partner, from jogging even in the fog, to having a barbecue in Malibu away from the smog. The singer appreciated the books they enjoyed together and now wishes he had a book by Sigmund Freud to ease his pain. The last stanza reminiscences about their evenings together in Broadway, enjoying great shows. However, the singer now starts watching the Late Show alone, wishing his partner was there to watch it with him. Unfortunate that this song didn't reappear along with the many revivals of Red Roses for a Blue Lady. Thanks for sharing!

Dave Gaba

Marvelous 'sequel' tune to its more-famous predecessor, just beautifully done. They don't make 'em like this anymore...

MsCatreona

Ah, yes. I had forgotten this sequel. Thanks for uploading.

Bryan Rendleman

The diction, phrasing and enunciation is sublime from what we hear today.

Who knew that "Red Roses" had a "Part 2"? Tepper and Bennett (ne Brodsky) also wrote "The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane", "Nuttin' For Christmas" and a lot of songs for Elvis' movies- even though they never met the King!
