On 15 October 2006, Vicky Leandros was elected town councillor of the Greek harbor town of Piraeus on the Pasok list. Her task concerned the Cultural and International development of Piraeus. She also served as Deputy Mayor of Piraeus. It was announced in June 2008 that Leandros decided to leave her position in Greek politics with immediate effect, stating that she had underestimated the workload and time needed to fulfill her political obligations and that it had become impossible to combine those duties with her singing career.

Lay Down
Vicky Leandros Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Gentle as????
Warm are the memories
Of my love for you
You say that you're happy
And everything's fine
But have you forgotten
Lay down
Lay by my side tonight
Lay down
Stay till the morning light
Though I know
That we never can make it
And our two worlds
Have drifted apart
Woh, oh, oh
Lay down
And I'll be your lover tonight
Time may have changed us
But something remains
Deep down inside us
Our love's still the same
So don't try to fool me
Cos it's no surprise
That I see the feelings
Still there in your eyes
Lay down
Lay by my side tonight
Lay down
Stay till the morning light
Though I know
That we never can make it
And our two worlds
Have drifted apart
Woh, oh, oh
Lay down
And I'll be your lover tonight
Just one more heartache
One more goodbye
I know is the last time
I'll cry.
In the lyrics of Vicky Leandros's song Lay Down, the singer expresses her gentle and romantic memories of loving someone. The opening two lines, "Soft as a moonbeams / Gentle as?", suggests the softness and delicacy of the love that she experienced. She remembers how happy she was with this person and how their love was warm and affectionate. However, she also acknowledges that they have since gone their separate ways.
Despite this separation and the seeming inability to rekindle their love, the singer still feels a strong connection to this person. She sees the traces of their love in their eyes and realizes that, though time may have changed them, the love they had shared still remains. The lyrics "Time may have changed us / But something remains / Deep down inside us / Our love's still the same" perfectly capture this realization.
The chorus of the song is a plea to be with this person one more time. The repeated line "Lay down / Lay by my side tonight" suggests a desire for intimacy and closeness, while the line "And I'll be your lover tonight" expresses the singer's longing to be in a romantic relationship with this person once again. The closing lines speak to the singer's hope that this will be the last goodbye, and that she can move on from the heartache of their separation.

I'm convinced: The lady has a voice, can sing, do "covers" with a straight face, and make an good impression! She should have mad an effort to make her presence known in the US; she would have been well-received, for sure!!!

Wow , never heard a better version than Melanie's untill now. What a volume instead of the thin Melanie voice. Thank you!!

Melanies makes some more mood with her shaky voice :-) for this song

There's something to be said for frailty. Anyone can overdo a cover.

I've been a big fan of Melanie Safka since the early 70's and yes, this is one of her very best, and a "signature " song for her, and was written about her personal experiences. But Vicky Leandros is such a fantastic artist, and a great interpreter of songs. so I think her version stands on its own. Even tho' I can see how it might be a bit awkward if Melanie were to do a version of "Apre`s Toi" or" L'enfant au ballon" ... So I can see both sides. Personally I like Vicky's interpretation a lot.

In my opinion, I don't care who sings what, I just simply enjoy good music, and this is good music. EVERYBODY IS TALENTED IN THEIR OWN WAY, whether they sing their original or not. I love Vicky's music, her voice is out of this world. Thank you for sharing this.
