Pioggia di Novembre

Mi pare sarà
Eppure non piove e nuvole
Non ne vedo di qua
È una striscia di cielo
Non diversa da prima
Solo freddo d'autunno
Piove sulle varesine e gira gira
La giostra senza fine
Cade sopra i tram che passano lenti
Di ferro e di legno pazienti
Con un occhio solo
Buoni da guardare
Dinosauri in fila ad asciugare
Piove sui pensieri dietro ai fanali
Delle tangenziali
E bagna nei cortili i gerani
Le nere ringhiere
Le lingue straniere
I viados di Gioia
La casba di Buenos Aires
Le edicole accese
Le borse e le spese
Piove sulle campane
Delle pievi romane
Sulle grazie sui ceri
Sui voti e sui desideri
Cade sopra i piedi dei bambini
Che ci sono ma non li vedi
Sugli ortomercati
Dentro i fabbricati
Sopra le collette di spicci e sigarette
Su uomini e su cani
E piove sulle urla dei villani
Sul cimitero monumentale
Sugli attacchini sugli spazzini
Sulle chiese dei filippini
Sui tavolini dei baracchini
Sui gatti tristi dentro i cortili
Sulle collane degli abusivi
Sul padiglione degli infettivi
Sopra i germani dentro i navigli
Sui treni caldi dei pendolari
Sopra i silenzi dei tassinari
Sulle africane per mezzo ai viali
Sopra i parenti negli ospedali
E piove stasera anche sul chiuso della galera
E venga la pioggia a Novembre
A lavarmi i pensieri dal fango e dal mal.
In Pioggia di Novembre, Vinicio Capossela paints a vivid picture of a rainy autumn day. The song starts with the singer noticing that it seems like it's going to rain, yet there are no clouds in sight. He looks up from his sixth-floor window and sees just a strip of sky, still the same as before, except now it's cold and colorless. Suddenly, raindrops start hitting his face, making a sound like an alarm clock ringing on distant gutters. The rain washes the cars parked on the street, sets off alarms, wets the dried-out flower beds, and soaks everything in its path.
As the song progresses, the rain falls on different places and people, such as the trams rolling slowly by, the courtyards with their geraniums and foreign dwellers, the African women on the boulevards, and the inmates in the prison. The rain even falls on memories and hidden thoughts behind the streetlights of the overpasses and the cigarettes and coins held by the hands in the streets. In the last line, the singer welcomes the rain in November, as it washes his thoughts from the mud and sorrow of life.
Pioggia di Novembre has a somber yet poetic and vivid tone that allows the listener to visualize a specific moment in time. Capossela's use of rain as a symbol of cleansing emotion and sorrow is prevalent throughout the song, adding to the melancholic mood of the lyrics.
