Contrada chiavicone
Vinicio Capossela Lyrics

Mamma mia, mamma mia
S'è smarrita la via
Pensa a me, pensa a me
Qui perduto per via
Solo chi cade offre la vista edificante
Di rialzare il capo dal fondale sottostante
Disastro sfreccia rapido in vespetta
Mamma mia, mamma mia
S'è smarrita la via
Pensa a me, pensa a me
Mamma mia, mamma mia
S'è smarrita la via
Pensa a me, pensa a me
Qui perduto per via
Solo chi cade offre la vista edificante
Di rialzare il capo dal fondale sottostante...
The song Contrada Chiavicone by Vinicio Capossela seems to be painting a picture of a run-down and impoverished area called Contrada Chiavicone. The first stanza talks about cats rubbing against each other in love, women with mustaches on the marble trough of the kids (possibly referring to women doing laundry), rust, scraps, and old things in the tar. Giacomo passes by with a cart made of cardboard. The second stanza describes old people heavy with garlic and dialects spying while they make the dough, barking between the pipes, and chained dogs. The third stanza mentions the shaking of the sheet metal, buzzing of flies under the tent cloak, nets without beds and mute souls over the roof while the wind never stops blowing. The refrain, "Mamma mia, mamma mia, s'è smarrita la via, pensa a me, pensa a me, qui perduto per via" (My dear mother, my dear mother, the path has been lost, think of me, think of me, lost here) evokes a sense of despair and hopelessness.
The last two stanzas mention a disaster happening quickly and leaving a gust of sand behind, twelve boys at the gas station, smoke rising from the water tower, the sky darkening under coal's veil, the weeds burning, and us cleansing the reason. The last refrain is sung twice, and the same lines about burning memories of the past, obscure skies, and cleansing reason are repeated. The final line, "Di rialzare il capo dal fondale sottostante," means "to lift one's head from the underlying seabed," perhaps referring to the notion that we must work hard and rise above our troubles.
